caring at christmas

Company at Christmas

FOR MOST of us Christmas brings time with family and friends. Sadly this is not true for everyone. Among the many who face a lonely Christmas are a surprising number of blind and partially sighted people. The number one problem experienced by many of those who are blind or losing their sight is loneliness. Making new friends is a challenge when you can’t easily go where you want to

when you want to. Torch Trust exists to express Christian love and care to blind and partially sighted people across the UK and around the world. The holidays we run at Torch’s Holiday and Retreat Centre in Sussex are always popular but the Christmas Houseparty is always booked solid months in advance. Everyone who comes is someone who would otherwise have spent Christmas alone.

There’s also extra demand for Torch’s library service that loans Christian books in audio, giant print and braille formats. A good book, a Christian novel, biography or missionary story can be a companion on the lonely days when everyone else is occupied with their families. Perhaps there’s a way you can help a blind or partially sighted person this Christmas. Contact Torch Trust for ideas – 01858 438260.

Practical love in a broken world

LAST YEAR WHCM Counselling, a Christian charity providing professional counselling services in Basildon, Chelmsford and Plaistow, supported over 1,000 people and delivered almost 12,000 counselling sessions. We work with children, young people and adults, including couples and family counselling. Even when filled with the hope that our faith in God brings, sometimes the demands of everyday life can be too much. The loss of a loved one, illness, separation, divorce, violent relationships, worries about money or mental health problems, can make people feel overwhelmed. Sometimes it helps to talk to somebody completely outside of the situation. That is where WHCM Counselling comes in. Counselling is provided by a professional and approachable team and our service is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Our aim is to provide affordable and accessible help at a time when an individual needs it. Not everyone can afford to meet the full cost of counselling and so WHCM Counselling relies on the generosity of individuals, groups and churches to ensure that we can respond to those in need. If you can consider adopting this charity for your Christmas appeal this year please contact Anne Bouvier or Peter Kendal on 01245 269335. Trudy Kilcullen is Chief Executive of WHCM.
