As the 1996-97 season came to a close we focused on the return of Roberto Baggio to international duty. After a two-year absence ‘Il Divin Codino’ finally got over the misery of his USA ‘94 penalty miss by helping the Azzurri to a 3-0 win over Poland in Naples with a truly spectacular goal, thus pushing Italy ever closer to the following year’s World Cup Finals in France. On the domestic front, Juventus celebrated their centenary by adding a 24th Scudetto to the trophy cabinet. However, the Bianconeri failed to bring home a third European Cup crown after being beaten convincingly by a determined Borussia Dortmund side in the Final. Also inside... • A young Hernan Crespo began his Italian adventure with Parma. • Lazio star Pierluigi Casiraghi revealed his ambition to play in England and follow in the footsteps of Roberto Di Matteo, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola, who were all plying their trade in the Premiership. • Inter failed to lift the UEFA Cup after losing on penalties in the second leg of the Final at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza against Schalke 04. • Minnows Vicenza battled it out against Napoli in the Coppa Italia Final and it was the northern side who won 4-1 on aggregate to take the Cup home for the first time.
