Marcelo Zalayeta’s double finishes off Frosinone, while Napoli notch up their 10th 1-0 win of the season and Genoa register a record ninth straight home triumph. Ten-man Bologna and Lecce complete remarkable comebacks, as Rimini break from Mantova. Spezia’s second consecutive away victory takes them from the play-out zone and Arezzo make it three wins on the bounce, but it’s practically over for Pescara and Crotone.

For the first time in their 95-year history, Grosseto are celebrating promotion to Serie B. After last year’s heartbreaking play-off Final defeat at the hands of Frosinone, the Tuscans were determined to leave nothing to chance this time around and fended off Sassuolo thanks to a tight 1-0 win at Andrea Mandorlini’s Padova. Scenes of jubilation greeted the Torelli upon their return and the man at the helm, ex-Juventus and Azzurri midfielder Antonello Cuccureddu, is guaranteed hero status. Sassuolo – who are chasing a second successive promotion – must now meet Monza in the play-off semi-final. The race for the last remaining play-off spot was equally hotly contested and ended in dramatic fashion as a last-gasp Fabrizio Romondini goal saw Venezia steal fifth place from luckless Cittadella and line up a play-off date with Pisa. After six years trapped in calcio’s basement, Ravenna have rejoined Serie B having beaten Avellino to the Serie C1B title. Although a draw at Teramo in Week 33 effectively sealed a place in the Cadetti, the Bruno Benelli side had to clinch a final day victory over Foggia – watched by Ravenna native Arrigo Sacchi – to allay fears that Avellino would appeal a two-point deduction for financial irregularities. While Avellino’s Raffaele Biancolino finished as Capocannoniere for his part in a lethal 39-goal partnership with the highly rated Felice Evacuo, the Biancoverdi must first negotiate the upwardly mobile Taranto in a play-off semi-final to keep alive their hopes of an immediate return to the second tier. Foggia meet last season’s Serie C2B champions Cavese in the other semi-final. Meanwhile, Paolo Di Canio’s Cisco Roma fell just short of automatic promotion from Serie C2B and face a play-off against Reggiana, who were in Serie A as recently as 1997. PAUL WATSON
