RANDY WILLIAMS defends his Olympic long jump title at the 1976 Games in Montreal, writes Rosemary Paxman. The American had won gold, aged just 19, at the Munich Olympics four years earlier, but here he finished runner-up to fellow countryman Arnie Robinson. A student at the University of Southern California and clutching a small teddy bear for luck, Williams had set a world junior record of 8.34m in the qualifying round at the Munich Olympics – a record that still stands today. In the final he leapt 8.24m in the first round to beat Hans Baumgartner, of Germany, by six centimetres. Due to an injury sustained while warming up, his second best jump was 7.80m, which would have left him well out of the medals in eighth. Britain’s Alan Lerwill finished seventh with 7.91m, while the co-holders of the European record, Igor Ter-Ovanesyan and Sepp Schwarz, were eliminated in the qualifying round. Today, Williams remains the youngest athlete to have taken a long jump gold at the Olympics. After three years of uninterrupted national titles both indoors and outdoors, he had high hopes of defending his title in the 1976 Olympics. But in Montreal his best jump of 8.11m was not good enough to beat Robinson’s 8.35m. Preparation for the 1980 Olympics saw Williams finish third in the US trials to qualify for his third Olympic team at the age of 26. However, the US
boycott of the Moscow Olympics left him unable to compete. In 2003 Williams was named as one of 11 finalists for election into the US
GeorgeHerringshaw
Track & Field Hall of Fame. However, he was beaten by middle-distance runner Mary Decker-Slaney, as well as and 400m runner Mike Larrabee.
