CHINA GOLDEN GRAND PRIX, Shanghai, September 20 TYSON GAY improved his US 100m record to 9.69, which equalled the second fastest time of all-time.
The 27-year-old did not enjoy the best of starts, but the former world 100m and 200m champion powered through in the second half of the race to improve his US record by 0.02. Asafa Powell, who led Gay by half a stride out of the blocks, was second in 9.85 while Darvis Patton was third, equalling his PB of 9.89, and Nesta Carter fourth (9.91). Harry Aikines-Aryeetey set a season’s best of 10.13 to finish fifth.
Gay’s US record was aided with the maximum legal wind limit of 2.0m/s and the American equalled Usain Bolt’s Chinese all-comers’ record. Only Bolt’s world record of 9.58 stands better than Gay’s time.
Carmelita Jeter’s startling postBerlin improvement continued and one week after winning the World Athletics Final in 10.67 to move to third on the all-time lists, the 29-yearold shaved another three hundredths from her PB to surpass Marion Jones on the all-time lists. Jeter’s 10.64 was aided with a tailwind of 1.2m/sec and

the American No.1 easily defeated 2007 world champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, second in a season’s best of 10.89. Only Florence GriffithJoyner’s performances of 10.49, 10.61 and 10.62 are superior to Jeter’s lifetime best. UK 100m champion Joice Maduaka was almost a second behind in 11.60.
Former world and Olympic hurdles champion Liu Xiang made his longawaited return to the track after injury ruined most of his 2008 and 2009 seasons. The former world recordholder clocked 13.15 to cross the line level with USA’s Terrence Trammell, but the American was awarded the victory. Allyson Felix won the 200m in 22.37 to defeat Cydonie Mothersill and Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie, who were both timed at 22.45, while UK champion Emily Freeman was fifth in 22.79.
Robert Tobin led the 400m coming off the final bend but world and Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt found the strength to maintain his unbeaten run this season, clocking 45.28 to Tobin’s 45.49. Jamaica’s Shericka Williams narrowly pipped compatriot Novlene Williams-Mills in the 400m, 49.83 to 49.85. Nicola Sanders was fourth in 50.80 while Lee McConnell set a season’s best of 51.45 to finish sixth.
In another exciting duel between world champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Olympic champion Dawn Harper, the Jamaican narrowly prevailed. Both athletes were rewarded with a stadium record of 12.56, but FosterHylton was given the verdict in a photo finish. Yelena Isinbayeva won the pole vault with a 4.85m clearance before three unsuccessful attempts at a would-be world record height of 5.07m. Gelete Burka won the 1500m in 4:02.15 and Helen Clitheroe set a season’s best of 4:08.31 for eighth. GERMANY REAL BERLIN MARATHON, Berlin, September 20 HAILE GEBRSELASSIE won the Berlin Marathon for the fourth consecutive year, but the 36-year-old fell short of his world record of 2:03:59 as rising late morning temperatures slowed the Ethiopian in the closing stages. Gebrselassie’s world record chances looked promising as the multiple world and Olympic champion passed through the halfway stage in 61:45, which was 18 seconds faster than world record schedule.
The world record-holder continued to extend his cushion on last year’s schedule at 30km, clocking an unofficial world best of 1:27:44 to his 2008 split of 1:28:27, but Gebrselassie began to fade rapidly in the final quarter of the race. Gebrselassie nevertheless won with comfort but he slowed markedly to 2:06:08, defeating Francis Kiprop and Negari Terfa, who set lifetime bests of 2:07:04 and 2:07:40 respectively.
The highly anticipated duel with Duncan Kibet did not materialise as the second fastest marathoner of all time lost touch at 20km before dropping out after the 30km point. Tomas Abyu was the leading Brit, finishing 13th in 2:15:35 – 15 seconds outside Andi Jones’ 2008 UK-leading time from London.
Atsede Habtamu won the women’s race in 2:24:27, easily finishing ahead of Russia’s Silvia Skvortsova, who clocked 2:26:24. Hayley Haining placed 10th in 2:36:08. POLAND PEDROS CUP, Szczecin, September 15 WORLD finalist Kate Dennison set another UK pole vault record, improving from 4.58m to 4.60m to finish third behind world champion Anna Rogowska and Aleksandra Kiryashova. It is Dennison’s ninth British record of the season and a 20cm improvement on her pre-2009 PB.
Asafa Powell concluded the evening with the best performance of the meeting and, on a cool night, the former world record-holder eased to 9.82, leading Jamaica to a clean sweep of the top three places as Nesta Carter and Michael Frater were second and third in 10.10 and 10.23 respectively.
World silver medallist Lisa Dobriskey was narrowly beaten by Christin Wurth-Thomas in the 1500m. In a slow and tactical race, WurthThomas took the victory in 4:07.31 to Dobriskey’s 4:07.63. Newham & Essex Beagle Rabah Yousif won the 400m in 45.64 to defeat UK champion Robert Tobin, who was second in 45.95.
After a tentative start, Tyson Gay easily wrapped up the victory in the 200m, stopping the clock at 20.21 to defeat Britain’s Jeffrey Lawal-Balogun, who clocked 20.85. RUSSIA EUROPEAN JUNIOR CHAMPION CLUBS CUP GROUP A, Moscow, September 19 ENFIELD & Haringey’s junior men produced a determined team effort to finish sixth overall, with their sole individual win coming from last-minute reserve Jordan Huggins, who won the 200m in 22.22. Ben Nagy finished second in the 3000m steeplechase despite banging his trailing knee hard on a barrier with a lap to go. Jay Hill was third in the hammer with a PB of 60.29m.
