Welcome

As the EYFS becomes embedded in your thinking and practice across the early years, Featherstone Education continues to be a source of support for practitioners, teachers, managers, trainers and parents. During 2009, the role-play series What If? won the Practical Pre-school Gold Award, which exists to identify and reward excellence in the fields of educational equipment, childcare and books. All the products are selected and tested by practitioners themselves. What if we were Builders? and What if we were Pilots? are the latest titles in this series, and are now available in the shiny new format. Little Books continue to grow from strength to strength and there are more new titles planned for 2010. A & C Black have added to the Little Books range with a new series called the Little Topic Books, which provide an integrated, cross-curricular approach to learning by helping to create connections in children’s thinking as they play. Baby and Beyond will help you to ensure progression at every stage of development, by offering hundreds of ideas for activities across the whole EYFS age range. Communication, Language and Literacy continues to be a focus for practitioners and trainers, and your work on implementing Every Child a Talker (ECAT ) has been supported by the publication of Let’s Talk About… a new series which encourages the use of language through a range of popular topics such as Farms, The Park, Weather and Toys. A Place to Talk has new titles too – A Place to Talk at Home, At my Childminder’s, In KS1 and in Extended Schools. I was joined by Su Wall (who is very experienced in working with babies) in writing Sounds Fun, four new books linked to the stages of the EYFS and focusing on early phonological awareness in preparation for structured phonic work. These books focus on fun and enjoyment for babies and children as they attune their hearing and speaking. If you work with the youngest children, take a look at the highly photographic guidance in Making the Most of Recycled Materials and Making the Most of Light Boxes and Mirrors, and if you work with parents, the series of four books called 50 Fantastic Things (for Babies; Toddlers; Pre-Schoolers and Four to Five Year olds) is intended for practitioners AND parents, who want ideas for activities that are quick, easy and effective for young learners. The Inclusions series, Key Issues (with links to Every Child Matters) and The Early Years Library contain new titles, including the book Ros Bayley and I have written together – The Cleverness of Boys. As well as other new titles look out for some older ones which have been redesigned, revised or enlarged. Setting the Scene, a book about the early years environment, is coming soon and will prove invaluable for those of you thinking about the importance of the environment in the Early Years and its effect on learning and emotional develop. As well as giving the catalogue a new look, A & C Black have redesigned the Featherstone website so it’s even easier to buy books online. They also have a team of reps who will visit your school or setting so you can look at the books ‘first hand’, a truly child-centred way to choose! Best wishes

Sally Featherstone
