Shopping, travelling and walks to the park offer lots of chances for babies and young children to learn about number and counting. Exploring shapes, colours and patterns in the natural world not only presents counting possibilities but enables children to become familiar with and confident in the use of mathematical language.
Young babies (0-11 months)
Talk and sing to babies as you shop, placing items one at a time in a basket, counting as you go. Give a young baby one small item to hold and when it is dropped say ‘Gone’. Count kerbs and steps as the pushchair rumbles over them. Explore the feel and texture of objects as you count them. Offer choices and ask, ‘more?’. Let children explore the natural world safely, sitting in lots of leaves, counting cones or shells, looking at flowers, nuts, pebbles.
Developmental Stage 1
Babies (8-20 months)
Babies learn by doing, so count the stamps you make together in a puddle, the taps on a railing, the number of times the baby comes to you as you push a swing and so on. Try lots of ‘Ready Steady Go,’ and ‘One, Two, Three, Go,’ games rolling a ball, throwing leaves, tssing pebbles in a puddle. To help babies towards one-to-one correspondence, talk about objects and who they belong to, such as mummy’s hat, Joe’s hat, Jilly’s teddy.
