Wireless networking has been a hot

topic for years, but the issue has

reached boiling point over the past

few months following studies which have

raised questions about whether Wi-Fi poses

a health risk. According to some reports, the

level of radio frequency radiation in some

Wi-Fi-enabled schools is up to three times

the level found in the strongest part of a mobile phone mast’s

signal. So should we be worried? Are wireless networks slowing

destroying our long-term memory? Well, no. There’s no evidence to

suggest the emissions from wireless networks are any more

dangerous than carrying around a mobile phone. In fact, you’re

probably more at risk from non-wireless networks – all those

trailing cables are an accident waiting to happen.

Setting up a wireless network has

never been easier, thanks to

smarter hardware and the

introduction of Windows Vista. We

look at the subject of setting up a

home network in detail in our

cover feature this month (page 14)

and explore Vista’s handy Network

And Sharing Center in this issue’s

Vista Workshop (page 68).

Another storm in a teacup

hitting the technology

headlines recently has been

the release of a Windows

version of Apple’s Web

browser, Safari. We take a

critical look at the new

software in our coverdisc

reviews pages this month

(page 43), and you can read

Mozilla’s response to Apple’s

browser plans in our News section (page 9).
