Do you offer refunds?

We like to have happy customers. If for any reason you're not satisfied with your subscription, please tell us within 30 days of purchase and we'll issue you with a full refund and cancel your subscription.

Do I have access to the magazine or book when my subscription ends?

Unless you renew your subscription you will not have access to the book, magazine or its back issues. Note that when you start your subscription you will have use of a number of back issues which are not part of the current subscription.

How can I renew my subscription?

Just visit our shop and buy a new subscription — if you already have a subscription to your selected title, we'll automatically adjust your new subscription so it doesn't start until your previous subscription expires. We'll also send you a link a couple of weeks before your subscription expires, so you can just click and renew. If you'd prefer not to renew your subscription, please just ignore this message.

If I renew my subscription will I continue to have access to the back issues?

Yes, except in the remote possibility that a publisher has to withdraw an individual issue or a whole publication.

Can my library have a subscription to some of the magazines or books?

Yes, we support institutional access to many of our publications. Librarians can set up IP access so that all machines within their institution are able to log in without requiring a password. For a list of available titles, please see our institutional shop.

How do institutional subscriptions work?

Institutional subscriptions are available from our institutional shop. These allow you to set up access for anyone within your library's network.

To set up a subscription for your library, click the "subscribe" links to add titles to your basket. When you're ready to purchase, click the "proceed to checkout" link and fill in your contact details.

You will choose a password — please keep this safe as it allows you to add IP ranges to your account. Anyone on a machine within your specified networks will be able to view the content you have bought. To make changes to your account you will need to log in with your email address and chosen password.

Institutional sales are by invoice only. We will contact you to arrange payment details once your account is live. Please note that if your library pays VAT on UK purchases we will be required to add VAT to your order at 17.5%.

My library subscribes, how do I log in?

You should navigate to our login form, where you will see a link which invites you to log in as a library member. If you can't see such a link, please contact your librarian and ask them to ensure your IP address (currently 38.103.63.18) is registered on the institution's account.

How is my library's subscription authenticated?

All institutional subscriptions are authenticated against your library's IP range.

My institution has several sites each with its own library, how do I ensure that our digital subscription can be viewed at all the sites?

You will need to buy a licence for each title for each site.

How do I see which titles are available as institutional subscriptions?

You will need to go to our institutional shop.

How do I pay for my library's institutional licence?

We will invoice you.

How do I buy a subscription for my library?

You go to the institutional shop, click the "Add to basket" buttons for the titles you'd like and complete the form with your details. You can then set up the IP ranges which will be able to access your subscriptions.

Does my library have to pay VAT on its institutional subscription?

VAT is chargeable on electronic products that are bought in the UK and for institutions in the EU that do not have a VAT number. If an institution has a VAT number then the VAT can be charged at source. Institutions within the EU should inform us of their VAT number so that the VAT can be charged at source.

Can I add other titles to my collection?

Yes, you can add more titles to your collection at any time.

Can a user search more than one title at a time?

A user can search a single title, a single magazine and its archive or a collection of magazines and their archives.

How does the search function operate?

Users can accurately search for key words across whole collections of content.

How are the search results ranked?

The search results are ranked by "best match" by default. This takes into account the number of times a search term appears on a page. You can choose to sort results by date too.

Can my library receive statistical reports detailing activity on our subscription?

This feature will be available in 2008.

Can the library's users access Exact Editions' titles remotely?

Yes this is possible providing that the access is via your library's authenticated network.

Which browsers does Exact Editions support?

Can I use keyboard shortcuts to navigate the magazine or book?

Yes. If your browser supports Javascript you can use the following shortcut keys:

Ctrl + leftPrevious page
Ctrl + rightNext page
Ctrl + upZoom in

How do I print a page?

You can print complete pages by zooming in until you're looking at a single page. You'll then find a 'Printable PDF' link above the page and to the right. Follow this link to show the page you want in Acrobat Reader. From here you can set up any printer options before clicking 'Print'.

If you've not got Acrobat Reader installed already (most computers have it), you can download a free copy from Adobe.

How do I print part of a page?

If you want to print only part of a page, follow the instructions above to show the page in Acrobat Reader. There will be a toolbar above the page with a selection of tools to save the PDF, zoom in, etc. You should select the 'snapshot' tool, which is an image of a camera inside a dotted rectangle. It should be about the eighth button in from the left.

Once you've selected the snapshot tool, drag out a box around the article of interest. Then click the 'Print' button.

The details of the printer options will vary according to the printer you are using, but you should see an option to choose 'Page scaling'. Choose 'Fit to Printer Margins' and click 'Print'.

That should print the part of the page you're after, stretched to fill the whole page.

Can I print the whole magazine or book?

You can print as many pages as you like from a title, though if you're planning to print the entire issue you might find that you use a lot of ink...

How do I bookmark an article?

You can just use your browser's bookmark feature to mark a page you'd like to remember. Each page in the Exact Editions system has a unique web address, so your browser can easily navigate back to bookmarked pages.

Can I send an article to a friend?

No, not unless they are also a subscriber to the digital edition.

Can I cut and paste text from an article?

This is not generally possible. The Exact Editions system presents an image of the page in the user's browser. The text which you see on the page is there in image form, not as editable text.

You can, however, copy a portion of a page image for use as a quotation (within the accepted limits of fair dealing). To do this, follow the instructions above to show the page in Acrobat Reader. There will be a toolbar above the page with a selection of tools to save the PDF, zoom in, etc. You should select the 'snapshot' tool, which is an image of a camera inside a dotted rectangle. It should be about the eighth button in from the left.

Once you've selected the snapshot tool, drag out a box around the section of the page you wish to copy. Acrobat will copy this area to the clipboard and you may then paste it into your document.

How do I cite an article?

Each page in the exact editions system has a unique url (web address). So to cite an article you should give a link to the url on which the article starts.

Will the page addresses ever change?

Exact Editions uses a systematic method for giving each printed page a unique url (and each double-page spread a unique url). These references will not change, though it is possible that some content may be withdrawn from the service (eg by the publisher, or because a publication ceases to be active).

What search syntax does the system use?

The searching is similar to web searching and, in general, the syntax of search terms is similar to that used by Google. So a search for 'David' and 'Cameron' will find every page on which both those two words occur, even it they are well separated. A search for "David Cameron" (including the quotes) will find the exact phrase, the two names in that order without extraneous matter.

How does Exact Editions highlight the results of a search?

The Exact Editions database knows where on the page every word is. It records the occurrence and the precise co-ordinates of the area of the page occupied by the type. The system then highlights the term by drawing a rectangle round the term and projecting that onto the image which shows the page in your browser. The searching, the list of results and the highlighting are all done in real time (you may have asked a question that has never been framed before), so it has to be efficient.

Why is some of the text not searchable?

Although most of the text in our library is searchable, there may be exceptions where the original text of the page was unavailable when the database was built. For example, the words in a cartoon will not usually be searchable, though its caption probably is. Also, some pages in magazines or newspapers are put together from artwork where the text has been 'vectorized'. This is quite often the case with widely circulated advertisements. In such cases the text in the advertisement is not searchable.

How do I make a phone call from a highlighted phone number?

Phone numbers are highlighted when they are in international format. If you have an internet telephony application (such as Skype) installed on your machine, you can click the phone number to make a call.

Why are only international phone numbers live?

Since the reader may be in any country (it's the world wide web, after all) phone numbers have to use the international format.
