Can I buy single issues?
No, access is by subscription only - for the duration of your subscription you will have access to all the issues we have for your chosen title. This includes back issues and new issues published throughout the year.

Yes, you can add more titles to your collection at any time.
Do I have access to the magazine or book when my subscription ends?
Unless you renew your subscription you will not have access to the book, magazine or it’s back issues. Please do note however that for the duration of your subscription you have access to many back issues which were published before you joined - the number varies by title, but is often several years worth of material.
I do not have a PayPal account, how do I buy a digital subscription?
You do not need a PayPal account to buy a subscription. When you arrive at the PayPal payment page, just choose the “Use your credit card” link and follow the steps to pay. You do not need to set up a PayPal account to complete your purchase!
Can I pay by Direct Debit?
We do not currently support Direct Debit. You can use MasterCard, Visa, Amex and other cards or PayPal if you wish to buy a subscription.

Can I access my subscriptions from an iPhone/iPad?
Yes, either with the built-in browser or using our free application, Exactly.
Exactly works on iPhones, iPod touch and the iPad. It takes advantage of the iPhone’s features to make it easy to read your titles on the move. If you’re a subscriber, just enter your username and password in the settings and you can access all your titles directly from the phone. Exactly remembers which page you were reading last, so it’s perfect for catching up on your reading when you have a few moments to spare.
Some publishers have their own branded apps so for more information please go to the section: iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad apps.
Renewals / Changing Details
How can I renew my subscription?
Just visit our shop and buy a new subscription — if you already have an account with us just enter your details and we’ll automatically adjust your new subscription so it doesn’t start until your previous subscription expires.

What do the icons mean in the menu above the page images?
These icons have the following meanings:

![]() | Go to a specific page number |
|---|---|
![]() | Go to the contents page |
![]() | Go to the previous/next page |
![]() | Zoom out |

The text is too small, how do I zoom in?
You can zoom in and using the magnify and minimise icons (
) or you can use the short cuts:

The text on the page is either too small or too big! What can I do?
You can fit a page to the width of your browser. If you change the size of the browser window the page size will increase and decrease along with it.
This feature should be automatically turned on but if it’s not then click on a page to a it’s full size click on the icon:
If a page is ‘locked’ to the browser you should see this icon:
This will allow you to adjust the page size to a reading size to suit you.
Printing
How do I print a page?
You can print complete pages by zooming in until you’re looking at a single page. You’ll then find a “Printable PDF” link above the page and to the right. Follow this link to show the page you want in Acrobat Reader. From here you can set up any printer options before clicking “Print”.
If you’ve not got Acrobat Reader installed already (most computers have it), you can download a free copy from Adobe.
How do I print part of a page?
If you want to print only part of a page, follow the instructions above to show the page in Acrobat Reader. There will be a toolbar above the page with a selection of tools to save the PDF, zoom in, etc. You should select the “snapshot” tool, which is an image of a camera inside a dotted rectangle. It should be about the eighth button in from the left.
Once you’ve selected the snapshot tool, drag out a box around the article of interest. Then click the “Print” button. The details of the printer options will vary according to the printer you are using, but you should see an option to choose “Page scaling”. Choose “Fit to Printer Margins” and click “Print”.
That should print the part of the page you’re after, stretched to fill the whole page.
We also have a “Clipping Tool”, please go to the section: Can I cut and paste text from an article?.
Can I print the whole magazine or book?
Some of our titles allow you to download a full PDF of the magazine (look out for the “Complete PDF” link). This is an optional feature and not all titles have it.
You can print as many pages as you like from a title, though if you’re planning to print the entire issue you might find that you use a lot of ink...
Bookmarks, Blogging and Linking
How do I bookmark an article?
You can just use your browser’s bookmark feature to mark a page you’d like to remember. Each page in the Exact Editions system has a unique web address, so your browser can easily navigate back to bookmarked pages.
Can I send an article to a friend?
No, not unless they are also a subscriber to the digital edition. You can, however, clip an extract from a page and post it to your blog. Look for “The Clipper” button (
) on the toolbar above the page image.
Can I cut and paste text from an article?
Most of our titles feature access to the text of a page in a box below the page image.
You can also copy a portion of a page image for use as a quotation on a blog or other site (within the accepted limits of fair dealing). Zoom in so that you’re looking at a single page and select “The Clipper” tool from the toolbar. You can drag a highlight around the section you’d like to quote and click the “Copy to Clipboard” button. Pasting the result into your blog will display a clipping of the page with a link back to the original.
How do I cite an article?
Each page in the exact editions system has a unique url (web address). So to cite an article you should give a link to the url on which the article starts.
Will the page addresses ever change?
Exact Editions uses a systematic method for giving each printed page a unique url (and each double-page spread a unique url). These references will not change, though it is possible that some content may be withdrawn from the service (e.g. by the publisher, or because a publication ceases to be active).
Searching
Can I search more than one title at a time?
A user can search a single title, a single magazine and its archive or a collection of magazines and their archives.
How does the search function operate?
Users can accurately search for key words across whole collections of content.
How are the search results ranked?
The search results are ranked by “best match” by default. This takes into account the number of times a search term appears on a page. You can choose to sort results by date too.

What search syntax does the system use?
The searching is similar to web searching and, in general, the syntax of search terms is similar to that used by Google.
So a search for David and Cameron will find every page on which both those two words occur, even it they are well separated.
A search for “David Cameron” (including the quotes) will find the exact phrase, the two names in that order without any extra terms.
You can exclude terms from your search by prefixing them with a – sign, for example:
David –Cameron
to find a David who’s not a Cameron.
To make a term optional, prefix it with |, like this:
|Brown |Blair
will find pages which mention either Brown or Blair.
How does Exact Editions highlight the results of a search?
The Exact Editions database knows where on the page every word is. It records the occurrence and the precise co-ordinates of the area of the page occupied by the type. The system then highlights the term by drawing a rectangle round the term and projecting that onto the image which shows the page in your browser. The searching, the list of results and the highlighting are all done in real time (you may have asked a question that has never been framed before), so it has to be efficient.
Why is some of the text not searchable?
Although most of the text in our library is searchable, there may be exceptions where the original text of the page was unavailable when the database was built. For example, the words in a cartoon will not usually be searchable, though its caption probably is. Also, some pages in magazines or newspapers are put together from artwork where the text has been ‘vectorized’. This is quite often the case with widely circulated advertisements. In such cases the text in the advertisement is not searchable.
URLs, Postcodes, ISBNs, Emails and Telephone Links
How can I change my postcode resolver?
You can change which resolver you use for postcodes by clicking on your preferences page. Under the heading “Site” you can decide if your postcodes will use Google Maps, Multimap, OpenStreetMap or Streetmap UK to display their location.

The default is Google Maps.
How can I change which online bookshop I go to when I click on an ISBN?
On your preferences page you have the option to choose which bookshop you would like ISBN links to taken you to.

The choices of bookshop are: Amazon German, Amazon UK, Amazon US, Barnes and Noble, Google, LibraryThing, Open Library and Play.com.
The default is Amazon UK.
How do I make a phone call from a highlighted phone number?
Phone numbers are highlighted when they are in international format. If you have an internet telephony application (such as Skype) installed on your machine, you can click the phone number to make a call.
