DAPHNE BOUTWOOD writes about her 1938 encounter with the author Angela Brazil on page 45. Her own writing career began in 1947 on the Cambridge University newspaper Varsity. She was fashion editor for Woman’sJournal, went on to the SundayTimes, has contributed humorous pieces to Punch, JohnBulland Homesand Gardensand, as Daphne Hope, has written romantic fiction for Woman’s Weeklyand Mills & Boon.

STEPHEN PILE is a retired journalist and has never been happier. He was the founder president of the Not Terribly Good Club of Great Britain, which was dedicated to the idea that doing something badly requires far more talent than doing it well. The author of TheBookofHeroicFailures, he has waited a quarter of a century before penning its sequel, TheUltimateBookofHeroicFailureswhich he writes about on page 53.

URSULA HOLDEN was born in 1921, served in the Wrens during the War, and later moved to Ireland. She has published twelve novels, including EndlessRace(1975) TheCloudCatchers(1979) and TinToys(1987). She now lives in a retirement home, continuing to write each day. In the late Sixties, before she became a published author, she met her literary heroine, Jean Rhys: see page 18.
