Welcome to
NovemberYoutoldusyourfavouriteUKrestaurants(from page 114), but what about this month’s contributors?
Margaret Stepien I was first in L’Anima in the City of London for a photoshoot. Seeing the stunning food definitely made it difficult to focus on photography. When I finally ate there, my expectations were more than met. I still think of the dessert soufflé as an intimate experience. Sleek interiors, impeccable service and Signor Mazzei’s warm welcome made me feel like I was a guest at his table (020 7422 7000; lanima.co.uk). Photographer Margaret shot our El Bulli feature, from page 100
Tom Kerridge I have a huge soft spot for the cooking of Daniel Clifford at Midsummer House, by the river Cam in Cambridge. After all, it was Daniel who, at midnight on 17 January 2006, called to tell us we’d won a Michelin star! The food is deep-rooted in France and uses the best produce with an exacting modern technique and a drive for perfection. Above all, the ingredients are treated with love and respect (01223 369299; midsummer house.co.uk). Try Tom’s supperparty menu, from page 108
Brigid Moss I love eating at Kota in Cornwall’s Porthleven. It’s a perfect combination of a locals’ favourite and a weekend treat, run by husbandand-wife team Jane and Jude. All the ingredients are locally sourced and cooked with love by Jude. Months afterwards I still crave the tempura oysters with wasabi tartare. They have cosy rooms, too, so you can collapse after dinner, full and happy (01326 562407; kota restaurant.co.uk). Read Brigid’s real-life infertility feature, from page 32
Catherine Gratwicke My favourite place to eat is The Thatch in Croyde, north Devon. It’s super relaxed, lively, has great service and just the sort of food you want after a day on the beach. The locally sourced food tastes fresh and reassuringly homemade. My children always order lasagne and ham, egg and chips; my husband and I go for the locally caught fresh fish (01271 890349; thethatch croyde.com).
