Youngsters can have the good sensor to drive well
The tiny sensor in position on right of on dashbord ledge. Young motorists in Congleton could be rewarded for good driving as part of a traffi c light coaching programme to improve road safety.
The Cheshire East Council scheme, for 17 to 21-year-olds, involves the fi tting of a sensor to the dashboard for 12 months.
It alerts motorists to hazardous manoeuvres and hard
raking with the fl ash of a red LED. The green light signals a good performance.
Cheshire East portfolio holder for environmental services Coun David Brickhill said: “By regularly reviewing and assessing driving patterns and behaviours with their families and road safety trainers, young drivers can learn how to develop their driving skills and confi dence, and reduce dangerous and inappropriate road behaviour.”
Coun Brian Silvester, council deputy leader and portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities said: “Unfortunately, younger drivers are more prone to having road collisions so it is right to target that section of our community for the coaching programme.”
For every green light that appears in the data, which is transmitted back to a secure website in a report, there are rewards to be won by drivers, such as reduced insurance premiums and shopping vouchers.
Figures show that almost 40% of those killed on Cheshire’s roads are aged between 17 and 25, while one in fi ve motorists crash within a year of passing their test.

Transport police on the track of rail metal theft
After a fall in the price of scrap metal last year, prices have rallied along with the amount of theft.
In response, there was a co-ordinated operation on Wednesday in the North West that resulted in fi ve men being arrested in connection with the theft of rail track and associated metal.
Bogus contractors have stolen track in the region believed to be worth more than £50,000.
The arrests were made in the Broughton area of Manchester and offi cers also discovered a small cannabis factory in one of the targeted houses.
In Crewe, scrap yard checks
were also carried out and offi cers issued warnings at two that were found to not be complying with paperwork regulations.
As a result of other investigations carried out by offi cers in the North West and colleagues in London, two men were charged in connection with the theft of three drums of railway cable from a depot in the Tommy’s Lane area of Crewe.
Cheshire transport police joined local police and Scottish Power to carry out an automatic number plate recognition operation between Penketh and Widnes in a bid to track down suspected metal thieves on the road.
Graduates appeal by uni’s Project Green

Project Green, Keele University’s sustainable business programme that offers unemployed graduates, or those at risk of unemployment, the chance to nurture the green shoots of a new career, is now recruiting for its December intake.
Graduates have the chance to gain new skills in environmental management and get paid at the same time. The programme includes study towards a post graduate certifi cate in environmental management and a paid work placement with a business to tackle an environmental project lasting at least four weeks and up to a possible 12 weeks.
Applicants need not have an environmental background and the scheme is open to both newly qualifi ed graduates who are struggling to fi nd employment and those who may have graduated a while ago and now face unemployment or are looking to reskill.

Football club signs Congleton web fi rm
Openhouse Europe, the Congleton based web, design and marketing agency, has been appointed as marketing consultant to Oldham Athletic FC.
Tim Gardiner, director of OHEU.net, has sports industry experience as sales and marketing director at West Bromwich Albion and group marketing director of JD Sports, the current Oldham sponsor.
His knowledge and experience convinced The Latics that Openhouse Europe could help take the club forward and advise it on its future marketing, including a re-branding exercise.
Mr Gardiner said: “We’re delighted to be appointed by Oldham Athletic, in what is an exciting period for the club and we believe we can add signifi cant value to how the club promotes itself to its fans and local businesses.”
Openhouse Europe has recently been assigned to work on projects for Michelin and Congleton High School.
‘Winter colours in the garden’ show
“Winter colours in the garden” is the title of a slideshow talk by Ann Harrison at the next open evening of the Congleton and District Horticultural Society.
Mrs Harrison, a popular speaker at the society’ s meetings, will prove that out there in the gardens are examples of all different colours, in fl owers, stems, leaves and even the bark of trees. In addition to photographs to prove the point, she will take along live examples to show just how colourful the winter garden could be.
This fi nal open evening for 2009 takes place in Congleton Library on Wednesday at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Work placements will be for a minimum of four weeks, although the employer has the option to extend the project by a further eight weeks. The university, via Graduate Advantage, will help fi rms pay for extended placements by providing a 50% wage subsidy.
The next round of placements, open to graduates throughout the region, will begin in December, with further rounds planned for April 2010 and June 2010. Each will have an intake of around 35 graduates.
