Our thoughts are with our Japanese friends at this difficult and chaotic time.To Jun Kataoka of Cycle Tec IKD, whose young family are safe, after suffering nothing worse than a broken television screen, and to Mac Nakane and everyone at Mizutani.The employees at this Tokyo folding bike distributor were at work when the earthquake shook the capital, and none have been directly affected. But some of their bike shop staff, friends and relations have lost houses and loved ones.

Full recovery will take decades, but we hope life in northeastern Japan returns to a semblance of normality in the weeks and months ahead. DAVID HENSHAW
