This year, for the first time, we hired a car to get to a cycle event. Once again, the Severn railway tunnel

was shut on both the Saturday and the Sunday during the 2009 Tour de Presteigne, and like many potential passengers with heavy luggage and/or babies, we just couldn’t face the extra journey time and

tedious transfers. In the event, there’s nothing the rail journey could have thrown up that would have made it worse than the car journey. The baby bawled us to a halt every thirty minutes or so, and the

evening dragged on, until by 9pm we were trying to make up time on a twisty ‘A’ road through Monmouthshire.Without warning, the wails turned into a torrent of sick, most of which fell into the food

hamper, but with more than enough hitting the back of the driver’s seat. Carrying a troublesome toddler by train isn’t always easy, but if you don’t mind marching up and down the carriage for hours, and studying trains, planes and automobiles at railway junctions, ours travels well

enough. So please, please, can we have our seven-day railway back?
