Once in a while it is our very sad duty to report the death of a dear friend, sometimes - as in this case - at the hands of an errant motorist. Norman Fay had been in the bike trade all his life, setting up his own shop in South Shields in 1965, which he was to run until handing the business over to his son in 2005. One of nature’s gentleman, Norman was kind, philosophical and generous. When we first visited,we were invited into the little parlour above the shop for tea, which is unusual! Tyneside is not the wealthiest place, but Norman had an instinct for picking winners, and the shop continues to thrive in the hands of Norman Junior, still specialising in recumbents and folders. He was killed on the Durham bypass on 20th June, riding a Pedersen to the Cyclists Touring Club rally. His ride partner John Stephenson was badly injured, but is recovering well. Our thoughts are with Norman’s family.
