IN MID-FEBRUARY, as the finishing touches were being put to this airshow guide, the coldest winter in 30 years still had not released its grip on Great Britain, and it did not seem possible that the beginning of the show season was only a couple of months away. The 2009 season may now seem a distant memory, but, despite a grim economic situation and some poor weather in the spring and early summer, the public showed an undiminished appetite for airshows. Many events reported an increase in gate numbers: one good arbiter was Duxford, which, over its five airshows during the season, posted an encouraging 2 per cent improvement. Museums also fared well, possibly owing partly to the “staycation” phenomenon, with people eschewing foreign travel during the downturn. The overall visitor footfall to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford was 428,797 in 2009, up from 403,748 the previous year. With so many other leisure options now available, these figures should cheer those who despair at the seemingly unstoppable march of the retail industry juggernaut. But increased regulation poses threats to the future freedom to enjoy airshows — so, this year of all years, get out and support as many events as you can!
