Thestartingpointwasthe VenomNF.2,“navalised”witha shroudedV-framearresterhook attherearofthenacelle,folding wingshingedatapproximately halfspan,andpick-uppointsfor thesteam-catapultstrop. Longer-strokeoleoswerefitted onastrengthenedundercarriage, andthetailbumperwasenlarged. Re-profiledwingtiptanks,holding 80gal,hadfueljettisonoutletsat theirrearandhorizontalfins.The NF.2’sGhost103wasretained,and theheavily-framedcanopyforall threeprototypes,butproduction aircrafthadclear-viewcanopies. InFleetAirArm(FAA)service theywereoriginallydesignated SeaVenomNF.20s,butin1951 theywereredesignatedSea VenomFAW.20s.
