THE WORLD’S ONLY surviving Spartan NP-1 trainer went on display at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum (TASM) in March. Used by the US Navy as a basic trainer, the 225 h.p. Lycoming R-680-8-powered biplane’s greatest claim to fame came on November 21, 1942, when George H.W. Bush made his fi rst solo fl ight in an NP-1. Museum curator Kim Jones says, “This was the only Spartandesigned and -built military aircraft that saw signifi cant service during World War Two. It played a large part in Tulsa’s contribution to the war

Spartan built a total of 201 NP-1s at its Tulsa plant during 1941–43. It was the most numerous, but also the last, aircraft developed and built by the company, which is most famous for the sleek Spartan 7W Executive.

The TASM machine was built in 1941. At the end of the war it was donated to a technical school in Seattle, where it was discovered in a derelict state by Jeff Wright of Portland, Oregon, in 1969. After a 15-year rebuild, Wright fl ew it in the summer of 1984 as N28700. It was acquired by the TASM in 2008.

Hunter reunion for Old Warden

25 Years Ago This Month ON MARCH 20 the D.H. Hornet Project’s (DHHP) reproduction Hornet F.1 cockpit, right, was displayed in the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre at London Colney, Herts. David Collins from the Chelmsford-based DHHP says, “I have two complete canopies and the canopy rails, so nothing major is required for the front end. Once the nose is complete, I can move further down the fuselage”. No complete example of the Hornet survives anywhere.

JUNE 1984’S AEROPLANE featured news of a threat to the North East Aircraft Museum’s site at Sunderland Airport owing to the impending arrival of a new Nissan car plant, and the acquisition of airworthy Leisure Sport Sopwith Camel replica G-AWYY by the Fleet Air Arm Museum. Also reported was the reappearance of Shuttleworth Collection Avro 504K in a new colour scheme as H5199 in place of the previous and long-established E3404, and the planned inauguration of the Stampe Club.
