Editor’s Note

I’ve often wondered what it would be like to look into the future. Would it be rewarding to see what is going to happen next or nerve-wracking to know exactly the outcome of any situation? The element of surprise is one of the truly amazing things about being here. As much as we look at probability and like to plan exactly what will happen, it’s just not possible. Take hindsight, for example, what you know now would most certainly affect the things that you did, but then you would never be open to the concept of possibility or positive risk taking, and I guess life would be rather dull. They say: curiosity killed that cat. So, we’ll just leave it at that. As autumn moves in, with crisp nights and brisk mornings, I think about what a wonderful year that it has been. Things with Aesthetica have never been better. It’s been a long haul, but a fantastic journey along the way. I guess that it is the most exciting thing about running this publication, you never really know what’s around the corner, and the element of surprise keeps me on my toes. This issue of Aesthetica brings together some wonderful features from Caryl Phillips to Jackie Kay, and in art Stuart Semple and the Turner Prize, while in music, Thurston Moore gives us some news from his solo album, while the film section brings the experiences of John Pilger and Ray Lawrence to light. Issue 19 of Aesthetica encapsulates current ideas and trends. I hope that you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed producing it.
