Partners s r e n t r a P A statement by Arab intellectuals, writers and journalists on the recent events in Bahrain, Libya and Yemen
We, the undersigned Arab intellectuals, writers and journalists, declare our full solidarity with the Arab peoples who have gone out into the streets to demand their legitimate rights, after their appeals were ignored for long years by corrupt government regimes only interested in remaining in their seats, without paying attention to the duties and responsibilities enjoined by their positions. We are appalled by what has been happening in Bahrain, Libya and Yemen in recent days, which have seen governments spill the blood of innocent citizens, who have done nothing except express their rights, and use militar y weapons. as though we were at war, in response to slogans that the people proclaimed with peaceful protests. These crimes, which are being committed by these regimes against their people, deserve not only our total condemnation; we also believe that these regimes must be brought to justice. In this statement, we also condemn and dissociate ourselves from the corrupt Arab media that has been tarnished by authority and has come to believe that its duty lies in falsifying the truth it sees before its eyes and not in repor ting it faithfully, as is demanded by the profession. We also declare that the so-called League of Arab Nations has lost its credibility after its voice is absent in suppor t of the legitimate demands of the Arab peoples in the face of regimes that have lost their legitimacy after shedding the blood of their citizens. Finally, we believe that the Arab peoples possess a will and a consciousness that makes them capable of winning their right to liber ty and that histor y shall place in its dark pages those who tried to prevent the realisation of that noble will and, next to them, the defeatists who are only interested in the gains they can glean from the blood of the mar tyrs.
