Perpetual Adoration planned for Olympics
BY DAVID V BARRETT
TWENTY-FOUR hour Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place in St Francis of Assisi church, Stratford, east London, throughout the Olympic Games, it has been announced.
Not just in London but throughout the country the Church is gearing up for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Priests and religious will be on hand in the Olympic Village for athletes, coaches and officials, with chaplains available for visitors to the Games. Spiritual and pastoral hospitality centres at St Francis of Assisi and Westminster Cathedral will offer Masses in different languages, talks by priests, and will also provide a place for volunteers at the Games to “chill out”, according to Frank van Velzen, assistant Catholic coordinator of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Church is a leading participant in More Than Gold, a major ecumenical venture to involve Christians throughout Britain in the Olympics, supporting both competitors and visitors with outreach, hospitality and service. Every parish is being encouraged to become involved, providing a Gold Champion who will be a link between More Than Gold and the local Christian community. There will be festivals both in London and around Britain, and Christian witness on the streets, with “street pastors” at stations around London. In just one of many activities being planned, four Christian theatre groups will put on plays related to the Olympics.
The Church will also be promoting Christian activity at sports fields around the country. Mr van Velzen said: “Sports Mission is about taking the Church outside the building in the hope of getting people back into it. It’s meeting the people where they’re at.”
Major sporting events often lead to an increase in prostitution and with the Olympics thousands of athletes, journalists and spectators will converge on London – as will people traffickers. More than Gold will raise awareness of this issue and provide safe havens.

Vatican recalls nuncio after Irish leader attacks Rome
BY ED WEST
THE HOLY SEE has recalled its ambassador to Ireland after prime minister Enda Kenny launched an unprecedented attack on the Vatican in parliament.
The Vatican Secretariat of State made the rare move after the Taoiseach criticised Rome’s intervention in the Irish Church’s child abuse procedures and accused it of “elitism and narcissism”.
According to a Vatican spokesman the apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, was recalled so he could attend meetings aimed at drafting the Vatican’s formal response to the Cloyne Report on clerical abuse.
In a statement this week the Vatican said that “particularly, after the reactions that followed, the secretary of state has recalled the apostolic nuncio in Ireland... for consultations”.
Passionist Fr Ciro Benedettini, vicedirector of the Vatican press office, said: “The recalling of the nuncio, a measure rarely used by the Holy See, denotes the seriousness of the situation, the desire of the Holy See to face it with objectivity and determination, as well as a certain note of surprise and disappointment over some excessive reactions” to the report’s criticism of the Vatican.
The report, which examined how the Diocese of Cloyne in Co Cork handled accusations of clerical abuse, said the bishop paid “little or no attention” to child safeguarding as recently as 2008, and that he falsely told the government his diocese was reporting all allegations of abuse to the civil authorities.
It also accused the Vatican of being “entirely unhelpful” to Irish bishops

For the latest news on the Irish Church visit CatholicHerald.co.uk who wanted to implement stronger norms for dealing with accusations and protecting children. Its criticism focused on a 1997 letter from the then papal nuncio to Irish bishops stating that the bishops’ newly introduced child protection policy was “merely a discussion document”.
Addressing parliament last week, Enda Kenny claimed that the Cloyne Report exposed “an attempt by the Holy See to frustrate an inquiry in a sovereign, democratic republic as little as three years ago. And in doing so, the Cloyne Report excavates the dysfunction, disconnection, elitism and the narcissism that dominate the culture of the Vatican to this day.”
In response, Vatican spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi issued a statement calling for more objectivity in discussing “topics so dramatic” because the first concern of all should be “the safeguarding of children and of young people and the renewal of a climate of trust and collaboration” between Church and state.
In announcing the recall of the nuncio, Fr Benedettini said the Vatican Secretariat of State wanted to ensure its response to the Cloyne Report was serious and complete and to do that it was necessary that “the person on the scene”, Archbishop Leanza, takes part in drafting discussions along with officials from the congregations for the doctrine of the faith, religious, clergy and bishops.
In a statement this week Irish foreign minister Eamon Gilmore said: “It is to be expected that the Vatican would wish to consult in depth with the nuncio.” Edward Pentin: Page 4 Rory Fitzgerald: Page 8 Mary Kenny: Page 12 Editorial comment: Page 13

Pope to meet Jews, Muslims and Lutherans during Germany visit BY STAFF REPORTER
POPE BENEDICT XVI will address the German parliament, meet Jewish and Muslim groups, hold a prayer vigil with youths and celebrate Mass in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium during his four-day visit to his homeland.
His schedule, unveiled by the Vatican last week, includes 17 talks and over 28 events. The trip, which runs from September 22 to 25, will be the Pope’s third visit to Germany but his first to Berlin.
After landing in the German capital Benedict XVI will meet government leaders, including Angela Merkel, give a major speech to the federal parliament, meet Jewish representatives and then celebrate an evening Mass in the Olympic Stadium, which Adolf Hitler had built for the 1936 Olympic Games.
The next day the Pope will meet Muslim representatives and then fly to the city of Erfurt, in eastern Germany, where Martin Luther studied and became an Augustinian monk.
He will meet representatives of the Evangelical Church in Germany, a federation of Lutheran and Calvinist church bodies, at the Augustinian monastery and will attend an ecumenical service.
That afternoon he will travel by helicopter to Etzelsbach, where he will preside at Marian vespers at the Wallfahrtskapelle, a popular pilgrimage site, before flying back to Erfurt.
On the third day after celebrating Mass at Erfurt Benedict XVI will fly to the university town of Freiburg im Breisgau, in south-west Germany, where he will visit an ancient cathedral, meet Helmet Kohl, former Chancellor of Germany, and visit the seminary there. He will also meet representatives of the Orthodox Church and preside at a prayer vigil with young people. On the final day he will have lunch with Germany’s Catholic bishops.
Priest leads prayers for Amy Winehouse BY ED WEST
wishers surrounded her home in nearby Camden Square.
PRAYERS were said for singer Amy Winehouse at a Catholic church near her north London home after the 27-year-old was found dead last Saturday.
At the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians in Kentish Town parish priest Fr Tom Forde mentioned the musician during the evening Mass, as hundreds of fans and well
The soul singer and songwriter’s Catholic neighbour Margaret Harvey, who is on the parish council, said: “Amy was a very popular and wellknown personality in the Camden area and always regarded it as her ‘home’. Such a sad ending for a brilliantly talented young lady. May she rest in peace.”
I’d rather lose than go to hell, says boxer BY MADELEINE TEAHAN
TYSON FURY, the new British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion, has said that his Catholic faith is more important to him than boxing.
Speaking before he won the title last Saturday the 23year-old Mancunian said he was praying for his opponent Dereck Chisora.
“I try to do everything by the Bible,” he said. “I’ve read testaments in church and I pray a lot. It’s the most important thing to me, more important than boxing.
“I would rather be knocked out 10 times by DC than not go to heaven. I’m God-fearing.”
Mr Fury insisted that there was no tension between boxing and practising his faith.
