Ruby’s Fund homes in on Bosley base

By Chris Young A centre for disabled children will open in Bosley, ending years of searching by a charity.

Ruby’s Fund was set p in 2008 to bring a sensory play area to Congleton for children with disabilities and developmental problems.

The charity has been offered the former Barefoot Living flooring uilding in Bosley, owned y entrepreneur Dawn Gibbins.

The charity was named after Ruby Parr, now four, who was born with developmental disorder. Her mother, Alison, found there were few local facilities where Ruby could play and learn, and so the fund was formed.

Having raised more than £44,000, Mrs Parr said there were few people and businesses in Congleton that had not helped in one way or another.

Mrs Parr said the Bosley facility would help families from the North West as well as Congleton.

An online questionnaire gauged demand for a play area and parents from Liverpool and Warrington said they would come to Bosley. Even Stoke City Council has expressed an interest.

Barefoot Living, based at Bosley crossroads, left the premises last year. Ms Gibbins is a member of Congleton’s Bearmania group and she and managing director Paul Bates decided the building would be ideal for Ruby’s Fund.

Mr Bates offered it to the charity on an eight-year lease for a reduced rate.

The charity had been close to finding a new home at the Cheshire East Council-owned business generation centre in Thomas Street, only to find out that the building had been earmarked for closure. • —Turn to back page.

Campest boy award ‘promotes bullying’

Congleton High School pupils will be asked to “reconsider” some of their student award categories, which ask them to vote for the campest boy and class creep.

One award category is for the girl with the shortest skirt in the school while some students were asked to nominate the most attractive teacher.

Nomination forms were handed out to year 11 pupils sitting their GCSEs later this month.

But one mother contacted the “Chronicle” after her son brought a form home, saying he was “terrified” he might be nominated for an award.

She was “disgusted” that the school should be promoting such “immature, irresponsible and Americanised behaviour”.

Award winners will receive a mention in the school yearbook. It is believed u ils chose the 50

categories themselves.

Head teacher David Hermitt this week admitted some of the categories were “emotive” and pupils have been told to look at them again.

Although some categories appear harmless — such as “most likely to be famous” and “best musician,” the mother, who did not want to be named, said others amounted to bullying, and created extra stress in the GCSE period.

Award categories included “campest boy”, “laziest person”, “blondest girl”, “most annoying person”, “most accident prone”, and “meanest person”.

There are also awards for teachers.

Sixteen-year-old pupils were asked which teachers they are most attracted to in the “most fancied male” and “most fancied female” categories. • —Turn to back page.
