Fighting talk with the Enemy at the ‘Brit’

Colin Murray is to host BBC Radio Five Live’s biggest outside broadcast at Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium next month.

The iconic sports panel show “Fighting talk” will take place in front of an audience of 6,000 on 26th May.

Alongside this show, Stoke City fan Nick Hancock will host a special local celebrity edition of the show, which will be broadcast on BBC Radio Stoke.

Mr Murray said: “‘Fighting talk’ is a family. The contestants, the staff and most importantly our listeners, and this is the ultimate family get-together. We will try to make this our best programme ever. Don’t be late!”

Radio Five live controlle Adrian Van Klaveren said: “We’re working really hard to take Five Live around the country, getting as close as we can to our listeners.

“We’re thrilled to be coming to Stoke-on-Trent, which will be a great place for our biggest audience event yet.”

Music will be provided music by The Enemy, who will perform live.

Entertainment will come from self-styled “German comedy ambassador” Henning Wehn.

Details of how to obtain tickets for the event are on bbc.co.uk/ 5live.

Tickets cost £10 each plus a booking fee.

Consultation over caravan park plan for Brereton site

Cheshire East Council has opened consultation over a planning application for a 1.23-hectare caravan site at Holmes Chapel Road, Brereton.

Brereton-based business Leisure Sales, which services and sells caravans, wants to expand operations by building a caravan park on an unused field within its six-hectare site.

It is hoped that the park will complement the business, located two miles from Congleton, by giving customers space to try out their caravan.

Leisure Sales also hopes to attract caravan users from across the country wishing to enjoy Cheshire’s tourist attractions.

The proposed site would include 42 pitches, each accommodating a caravan,

awning and car, as well as a water point and electric hookup. There would be a pitch nea the entrance occupied by a site warden, in addition to a singlestorey building with reception, office, toilets, and laundry and washing-up facilities.

The pitches, of various sizes, would be separated from each other by grass and hedging, and would be accessible via a looping Tarmac drive.

Leisure Sales claim that the site, built on relatively flat ground and 200m from the nearest road, was well screened by mature trees. The company has also promised to undertake further tree planting if planning permission is granted.

Consultation ends on Wednesday, 9th May.

Care homes hold wildlife week

Residents of Bupa care homes across Cheshire are calling on local communities to help reverse the decline in the UK house sparrow population by joining them in creating sparrow-friendly gardens.

Bupa has teamed up with the RSPB and the care homes are receiving expert advice from the wildlife charity about the best ways to help boost sparrow numbers as well as other wildlife found in gardens.

“Save the sparrow” is the main focus this year of Bupa’s annual wildlife week (7th–13th May), a week of special activities designed to create wildlife havens in care home grounds and gardens, to benefit species that are currently in decline in Britain.

As a result of a rapid decline in numbers in recent years, the UK house sparrow is afforded the highest conservation status. Although house sparrows are still seen in many gardens, their numbers have dropped by 55% since the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch survey began in 1979.
