and Lindy-hop dances alongside exciting and soulful music. The story of a 1940s jazz club, owned by the Mikado. “Hot Mikado” unfolds through its charismatic characters and their comic relationships. A modern adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado”, the show uses swing, jive and witty comic references to allow a traditional story to be appreciated via a modern, upbeat performance. CMT’s production of this exciting, energetic show has attracted cast members from across the north-west and has even drawn one ex-member back from London to take part. Director, Nicky Evans, is amazed at the commitment made by the cast in adapting to the new style. “Rehearsals have been full of energy and fun and everyone appreciates the challenges that the pace and syncopated rhythms of the work offer”. The show is vibrant, fast moving and upbeat from start to finish and is great fun for all ages. Plus, with this great offer, there’s no excuse to miss it!

C2311h Groups wait to find out if they’re on funding hit list
The Chronicle, Thursday, 14th October, 2010. www.chronicleseries.co.uk 5
By Chris Young Councillors clashed when a Cabinet member refused to disclose which organisations could have their funding cut under money-saving measures.
Coun David Brown told a meeting of Cheshire East Council’s Sustainable Communities Scrutiny Committee that it would e premature to reveal the list of groups currently receiving grants before the Cabinet had discussed the issue.
The committee, which met on Thursday, was told that over 150 organisations received grants, but giving out a list could imply they were all subject to cuts.
Partnerships manager Juliet Blackburn told the committee, meeting in Westfields in Sandbach, that the impact of cuts on different organisations would have to be taken into account before any decision was made.
The council has given over £3.5m a year in grants but some organisations must expect a funding reduction in the next round.
The discussion soon turned heated when Coun Howard Murray asked to see the list of 150 organisations being referred to.
He was initially told by Coun Brown that it was not possible but Coun Murray replied: “I think we can help refine the list for you. Why wouldn’t you use elected members of this? We need to see where the money has been going.
“I would like access to this info. Are you telling me I can’t have that info? That is not acceptable to me personally.”
Coun John Jones added: “I believe in open government.”
It’s time council was a fair trade authority: MP
Congleton MP Fiona Bruce has written to the chief executive of Cheshire East Council asking that consideration be given to the council becoming a fair trade authority.
The MP said: “As I have attended events across the Congleton constituency, from Alsager through Middlewich, Sandbach and to Congleton, at each place enthusiastic volunteers have been selling fair trade goods. There is clearly a groundswell of public support for Cheshire East to become a fair trade authority.
“Already Sandbach, Congleton Alsager and Macclesfield are fair trade towns, with Middlewich and Nantwich also working towards gaining the status, so it may not take a great leap further for Cheshire East to ecome a fair trade authority.
“Across Cheshire East a number of people have asked me to help make this happen, and as someone who uses fair trade products regularly and knows of their increasingly good quality and value, I am delighted to support this initiative.”
Margaret Keeling, chairman of the Alsager Fair Trade Town Steering Group, said: “We are pleased that Fiona Bruce has taken an interest in what the Cheshire East Fair Trade Steering Group wants to do and thank her for her support. Alsager has been a Fair Trade Town since 2007 and our membership was renewed this year. The new South Cheshire Methodist Circuit and the district which includes it are also aiming to become Fair Trade so it is a big issue locally.”
Deborah Darnes, a Sandbach Fair Trade volunteer, said:
“Sandbach has been a Fair Trade Town since July 1998. The steering group is made up of councillors and others from voluntary organisations or businesses in the community. We are all keen to promote fair trade and also link this to support for local produce and businesses. There was some concern about support for local produce and best value but I feel this is not an issue. Fair trade goes well with support for local produce as it tends to be things we cannot produce in Cheshire or, indeed, the UK. It is not always more expensive these days.”
To qualify the council would have to promote fair trade, have a number of café, retail outlets and businesses selling fair trade of using/supporting and use fair trade produce wherever possible at meetings.
COURT APPEARANCES
Canoeist Jane will be ‘sorely missed’
Coun Brown, portfolio holder responsible for performance and capacity, was attending the meeting as a guest. He said no funding decisions had yet been made by the Cabinet and so opening the list up to debate would be counter productive.
He added: “This information has been pulled together and has not been seen in this way before; it hasn’t even been seen by the Cabinet.”
Acknowledging that talk of a grant review could lead to panic among certain groups reliant on funding, he added: “It might be that some of these groups end up getting twice as much as they are getting now as we find we rely on them a lot more.”
Coun Murray replied: “We are supposed to have access to information. We just want to look at this list. You can’t use the excuse of ‘it’s going to Cabinet’ as an excuse to not take things to scrutiny committees.
“If we ask for something it should be ‘how do you want it?’”
Although Coun Brown initially refused to let the committee see the list, he later said he would email it to the committee members, provided it remained confidential.
● Scrutiny committees are made up of non-Cabinet councillors who discuss issues and refine decisions before they are adopted.
