Members of the Brereton Tuesday Club celebrated the beginning of Easter with specially made bonnets and an “ass”pirational parade.

The club meets every Tuesday at Brereton Primary School, but last week the school had an extra special meeting where they made Easter bonnets from marshmallows, sweets and biscuits.

The club also extended its Easter celebrations to the Sunday, when they took part in a Palm Sunday procession at Brereton Church, when Tilley the donkey made an appearance.

The group travelled around the church following Tilley and waving their palm crosses, as well as singing ‘”We have a King who rides a donkey”.

Inside the church the group then enjoyed plenty of activities including colouring a donkey puppet, reciting prayers and singing “Make way....make way” and “The Donkey Song”.

The children’s “cool church” sessions are held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month at 10.30am and anyone interested in joining the Tuesday Club should call the school on 01477 532116.

Help with family history research

Congleton Family History Group next meets on Tuesday, 20th April, at 7.30pm in Congleton Library (downstairs entrance).

Following the successful meeting in January, when members were given access to Congleton Library’s computer network, local librarian Mike Drew has again offered full use of the library facilities. Members will have access to the local and family history section and all the online computers including the library’s ancestry website.

This month is planned to be an open meeting to discuss the use of newspapers in family history research. At the start of the meeting, there will be a short talk from Linda Clarke a local studies librarian from the Cheshire Records Office. She will explain what is available and how to access it, she will also be able to offer general advice.

The group has a number of experienced family history researchers who can offer help to anyone who is unfamiliar with using local resources or using the internet.

The meeting will help researchers by explaining what is available and also how best to conduct their research.

Everyone is welcome to attend. At the last meeting in March Lyndon Murgatroyd gave an excellent talk entitled “Digging up the dead”. His talk started around 400BC and covered the history of anatomy. He included details on the history of body snatching and talked in some detail about notorious body snatchers Burke and Hare.

His talk was brought up to date with details on how the law has changed following the investigation in 1999 into the storage of body parts at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital at Liverpool.

The group welcomes anyone just starting out with family history or with experience. There is a help desk at each meeting. The group also holds its own library of CDs, microfiche and books which are available for loan to members free of charge. Unfortunately, this will not be available at the April meetin .
