Mossley can’t cope with another meeting place, residents tell the council
CARAVAN EXTRAVAGANZA
By Chris Young Mossley has enough meeting places and does not need a new community centre next to the hall on Leek Road, according to some residents. When plans for a village centre with a café, meeting room, television and comuter game facilities were ut on display in March, the public made favourable comments.
Six months later, Cheshire East Council has yet to make a decision on the planning application, but has received letters of objection, some stating there were already too many community centres.
Christine Jennings wrote: “There are already two community centres in Mossley: the existing village hall and the old school community centre directly across the road from the village hall.
“The car park is insufficient for the existing community centres when both are in full use. To extend the use on the site and reduce the parking spaces will cause even more congestion and will make crossing Leek Road an even more hazardous experience.
“Young people already congregate in the area around the take away facilities in Hightown. A snack bar could encourage this element to move to the village hall site in the evenings. This is not desirable on an open site.”
She stated that a new care home at Mossley House on Biddulph Road would also have a café, so the one proposed for the centre was not needed.
Mr and Mrs P Bailey, of Leek Road, wrote: “I take extreme exception to having a café next door to where I live. I do not want smells from a café. I do not want teenagers hanging around until past nine in the evening. Why is a café, a commercial business, being allowed in the centre of a
Life on earth more important that outer space, according to council’s planning officers
Scientists at Jodrell Bank, must understand that the need for housing outweighs the need to create the perfect environment for space exploration, according to planning officers.
Manchester University, owner of the observatory, has objected to a planning application for houses at Lower Withington, on the grounds that it would interfere with signals from space.
As previously reported in the “Chronicle,” the objection led to a decision being delayed last month while Cheshire East Council looked at the possible impact of the houses.
The council stands by its roposed approval of the application, pointing out that the observatory “does not exist in a vacuum” and that houses are needed for first time buyers.
The four houses and two ungalows, all affordable and roposed by Cheshire Peaks and
Plains Housing Trust, would be built behind Thorntree Bungalows at Salters Lane.
After further discussions, scientists still claimed the new houses would increase electrical and radio interference, hindering their ability to carry out experiments.
A report written for the planning committee says: “The Jodrell Bank observatory does not exist in a vacuum, and the housing needs of the local population should carry significant weight in favour of this proposal
“It is considered that the identified harm is not sufficient to outweigh the benefits of providing a small scale and appropriate affordable housing development in this location.”
The council’s Northern Planning Committee will decide the application at a meeting on Wednesday at 2pm at Macclesfield Town Hall.
Euro-MP backs Palestinian cause
A Congleton Euro-MP is backing calls for an independent Palestinian state.
British ministers decide this month on whether to back the cause in a UN vote to recognise Palestine as a country.
Liberal Democrat Chris Davies claimed that promoting justice for Palestinians was the single most important step that can be taken to promote global peace.
He also said that a peaceful Middle East would make the streets of Congleton safer.
Mr Davies said: “Palestinians hope that securing international endorsement for an independent state will strengthen their position in future negotiations with Israel, which is in military occupation of their land.
“Time and again Israel has blocked progress towards a peace agreement while it builds more and more settlements on Palestinian territory.
“When the UK stands by and lets this happen people are justifiably angry.
“With the Middle East changing so fast, this is the time when pressure must be applied on Israel to change its policy and negotiate in good faith.”
highly residential area?”
Lesley Green, of Abotts Road, said: “A local meeting place is a lovely idea, but not in such close proximity to residents’ homes and a busy, narrow road.”
Architect John Carter, agent for applicants the Chappell Centre, said of the public exhibition of the plans: “We had a book of comments and they were extremely positive. People thought it would be good for the community and the area, especially the young people of Mossley.
“Some of the objections are from people in the immediate vicinity of the site, so it is understandable they feel some anxiety, but at the end of the day, they are already living next to a community centre.”
Mr Carter said he knew the council’s planning department was strained with a large number of applications, but he was disappointed it had not yet made a decision.
Congleton Town Council and Cheshire East’s highways department had no objections to the application.
A decision is expected in the coming weeks
