By Chris Young Olympic year has lit up for Congleton schoolgirl Ailsa Macarthur this week.

The 14-year-old’s been chosen as one of the runners who will carry the Olympic torch through the town on Thursday, 31st May.

The netball player and runner, who goes to Eaton Bank School, entered a contest run by Coca Cola, one of the Olympic sponsors.

And she was picked as one of the lucky few by Alex James, bassist for Britpop band Blur and one of the contest’s judges.

She said: “It feels brilliant to be selected. When I read through other people’s amazing stories I never thought Coca-Cola would choose me as I’m just someone who loves sports and plays it a lot. But I’m very, very pleased to be selected.”

The once-in-a-lifetime torchbearing chance is welcome news for sports-mad Ailsa, as she was unable to get any tickets for the London Olympics.

Groups in Congleton aim to make the relay a memorable event and hope as many people as possible will line the streets to cheer her and the other runners on.

British Summer Time, when the clocks go forward, begins on Sunday, 25th March, 2012, and ends Sunday, 28th October, 2012.
