A local paper to be proud of Worker inhaled asbestos from gloves, inquest told
Using gloves made from asbestos early in his career was the most likely cause of a Congleton man’s death.
Graham Fielding, (65), of Ascot Grove, worked for chemical company Ciba-Geigy for most of his life, and died of mesothelioma, an asbestos related cancer in the lung, in January.
At his inquest, held at Macclesfield Town Hall on Thursday, his wife Janet spoke of how he had worked in laboratories where gloves made from the harmful fibre were sed to move hot metals. Mr Fielding, who retired three years ago, worked for the chemical company’s Macclesfield plant and one in Paisley in Scotland, becoming an international sales manager for its pigment division.
The company has since merged with German company BASF.
He first experienced breathing problems in the mid 1990s, and his condition deteriorated last summer, when a biopsy revealed the cancer in his lungs. He died peacefully at his home on 25th January.
Speaking at the inquest, Mrs Fielding, (64), said her husband, like most workers at the time, was unaware of the dangers of asbestos. She told the hearing: “We didn’t talk about it much in those days, the dangers weren’t generally known.
“He used asbestos gloves to put metal sheets into the oven. I think that was when the asbestos would have been in the air.”
Mr Fielding had used white asbestos when experimenting with different pigments. But Nicholas Rheinberg, Coroner for Cheshire, said white asbestos was less harmful, and the more harmful blue or brown asbestos, which the gloves could have been made from, probably caused the disease.
Summing up, Mr Rheinberg said: “The extraordinary thing is you can breath in these fabrics and it can be 30, 40 or 50 years before the illness develops.
“The asbestos gloves he worked with were bashed about, releasing clouds of dust into the air. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma, which is nearly always associated with asbestos, and it was likely developed during his exposure working in the chemical company.”
He then recorded a verdict that that Mr Fielding died from an industrial disease.

Wedding bookings being fast-tracked
Better broadband in Congleton is no optical illusion
Wedding arrangements are being speeded up, thanks to Cheshire East Council.
Prospective brides and grooms can now set a date as soon as they find their ideal venue, thanks to Cheshire East Council.
In a move believed to be a first for a UK local authority, the registration service is providing all premises licensed for civil marriage and civil partnership with internet access to its ceremony diaries.
It means that couples can see at a glance which dates registrars are available, enabling them to make a reservation at the same time as booking their venue.
Cabinet member Coun Rachel Bailey said: “The majority of ‘show rounds’ to couples at approved premises — particularly hotels and stately homes take place during evenings or at weekends. Understandably,
couples who have often travelled many miles to find their ideal venue can find it frustrating to discover they are unable to fully confirm their reservation until the next working day.
“Linking venues with our Registration Service software is a small change but one which is sure to make the wedding booking process considerably faster and more straightforward.”
Training is now underway to ensure that staff at licensed venues are familiar with the software by autumn, traditionally the peak season for ceremony bookings.
Each year registrars conduct approximately 1,500 ceremonies in 69 approved venues within Cheshire East, ranging from exclusive boutique hotels and restaurants to castles and stately homes.
Now is the ideal time for people to check if they can better their broadband provision, according to Congleton IT company Dane Solutions.
BT engineers are currently putting the finishing touches to faster broadband in the Congleton area.
The firm has rolled out FTTC — fibre to the cabinet broadband. Normally, the speed and stability of a broadband service is proportionate to the length of the BT cable that comes into a house or premises from the exchange. Previously, users had to be within 5km of the exchange to receive some degree of service — that’s the actual length of cable, not as the crow flies. FTTC removes that main length of cable issue to some degree by bringing the broadband connections to street level using optical fibre. Thereafter the service is dictated by the length of the cable between that new FTTC cabinet and a particular house or premises, which in some cases could be dramatic or even provide broadband in certain areas where not possible before.
Richard Wharfe, of Dane Solutions, said: “You may have seen lots of BT engineers digging up roads and pavements, and leaving new, green cabinets. These are the new cabinets that contain the broadband connections at street level.
“Over the next few weeks your service will be reconnected to these cabinets, so some users may see a vast difference in speed, others not, but this will mainly depend on checking what level of service you actually pay for.
“If you only currently pay for 2mb broadband speed, as that is the current fastest your line can provide, with the new FTTC connections you may now be able to select a faster and bettersuited package for your needs from your broadband provider.
“Users who use ISPs with full ‘LLU unbundled services’ status at Congleton exchange, such as Talk Talk/Tiscali, AOL, Be/O2, Orange, Easynet/SKY will be able to receive the greatest advantage with this new cabling.
“Regardless of your provider, a quick call to your ISP may be will worth the effort.”
