PAGE 6 Reassurance made over affordable housing plans

Building affordable housing for Congleton and Sandbach residents will be high on the agenda for Cheshire East Council after members ointed out that there is a shortage in those areas.

Speaking at a Cabinet meeting last Monday, councillors decided to take additional measures to develop more affordable properties and said the authority would need to address issues such as the identification of potential sites for building and funding opportunities.

Vice-chairman of the Cabinet Coun Roland Domleo said: “On the housing front Congleton and Sandbach have a far bigger affordable housing problem than Crewe or Macclesfield as those two towns have many acres of terraced houses, which are at the bottom of the price ladder. Congleton and Sandbach do not.”

He asked prosperity portfolio holder Coun Jamie Macrae for an assurance that Congleton and Sandbach would not be overlooked with regards to economic development and the provision of affordable housing, to which he replied they would not be.

Coun Andrew Thwaite added that when he came to live in Congleton, it was alive with many manufacturing businesses, many of which are gone, leading to a lack of jobs for local people who did not go to university.

He said the town should not be ignored and that it needs investment.

The council resolved to appoint officers to identify a list of potential sites, which would be suitable for the development of affordable housing.

It also agreed that officers should identify for the development of housing sites and compile reports to the Cabinet or relevant portfolio holders.

It comes after a report by homeless charity Shelter in March revealed that only 43% of the required affordable housing is being built in Cheshire East.

According to the figures, the council is responsible for a shortfall of 300 affordable houses a year.

The Rotary Club of Congleton’s annual presentation of the Ken Shuttleworth Memorial Shield took place last Saturday.

The honour went to the Trinity Seals, the Congleton Methodist church team that had raised £740 in Rotary’s 19th Swimathon.

The Seals, who missed taking top spot by £5 for the amount of money raised last year, won the senior shield, which was handed over by Rotarians during Trinity Market Day.

Rtn Ernie Harrison said: “It was a wonderful day. It was nice to be able to present the shield and we are extremely pleased that the Seals won after last year.

The weekend of celebrations,

which began on Saturday, included a fête with games, raffles and tombolas. Stalls were set up outside the church and in the car park. An estimated £14,000 was raised.

The shield is in memory of the late Mr Shuttleworth who was fondly known as “Mr Swimathon” for organising the popular fund-raiser.
