ANOTHER PUBLIC NOTICE APPEARS ON PAGE SIX Olympic torch relay: road closures are announced

The Chronicle, Thursday, 26th April, 2012. www.chronicleseries.co.uk 5

Commuters, workers, shoppers and parents have een urged to plan ahead when some of the main roads around Congleton will close for more than two and a half hours so the Olympic torch can ass through the town on Thursday, 31st May.

Roads from Sandbach Road to Manchester Road will be closed to traffic efore, during and after the relay.

Thousands of people are expected to line the route to cheer the runners on and local schools are planning for as many pupils as possible to witness the historic relay.

The road closures last from 7.45am to 10.25am, and will affect Sandbach Road (from Congleton High School), West Road, the Clayton By-Pass, Rood Hill and Macclesfield Road.

The relay starts at 8.55am. Public transport and Thursday bin collections are also likely to be disrupted.

Access to Barn Road Retail Park will also be limited.

The torch passes through Macclesfield, Knutsford and Crewe on the same day, so anyone travelling to those towns should also plan in advance. Access to Crewe train station will also be limited.

A statement from Cheshire East Council said: “There will be no access to the roads from any side roads or at any junctions. We are closing the roads for the safety of both participants and spectators and we will do our utmost to reduce disruption by reopening the roads as soon as it is safe to do so.

“We would encourage people to walk or cycle to see the torch relay wherever possible.

“For those travelling in their own vehicle we would encourage you to set off early to ensure you get to your destination in plenty of time. We would also ask that vehicles are not parked along the route which could cause disruption to the relay. Please park in streets wherever possible.”

A spokesman for the council said that Congleton schools would be making their own arrangements, and are likely to be informing parents via letter what would be going on.

Towpath trek in memory of Darren

From left, Daniel Hall, of Sandbach, Carl Leese, of Sandbach and Steve Holly, of Congleton with Jazz the dog who are walking the 97 miles of the Cheshire Ring for Macmillan. (“Chronicle” photo. 1526/12).

A Congleton man is commemorating the life of his late rother by walking the 97-mile Cheshire Ring canal system.

Thursday, 10th May, is the 10-year anniversary of Darren Holly’s death.

Over a four to five-day period from 11th May starting at Hassall Green, his brother, Stephen Holly, will step out on a “Hike for Holly” in aid of Macmillan Hospice.

He will be joined by his dog Jazz and friends Carl Leese, (37),

and Daniel Hall, (31) both of Sandbach.

Darren died 10 years ago, aged 22, after suffering from metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma — a rare form of cancer.

Mr Holly, (28), of Rood Hill, Congleton, hopes to raise at least £2,000. He said: “Macmillan provide a real difference to people with cancer in their last days. They helped fund my brother and his mates on some weekends away, and also provided an accommodation wing at the hospital for friends and family to be close during the long stays there.

“We will be backpacking and pitching tents wherever we can, hopefully in beer gardens!”

A commemoration evening for Darren will be held at the Black Bear Inn on High Street, Sandbach, on 10th May.
