It’s high noon for café demo

By Rachel Naylor A sit-down protest against Cheshire East Council’s alfresco licence policy takes place outside the Bread and Basil delicatessen in Congleton town centre on Wednesday at 12pm.

Congleton town councillor John SavilleCrowther and resident Phyllis Brightwell are inviting people to bring a chair to the Bridge Street café to demonstrate against the outdoor dining licences that were imposed on restaurants and cafés throughout

Congleton on 1st July.

The new regulation states that a proprietor who puts out tables and chairs on the pavement without a licence could be asked to remove them.

Coun Saville-Crowther said: “The café is happy for us to do this and are going to provide us with drinks. We’re making a stand against Cheshire East who are bringing in these alfresco charges.

“Small cafés and restaurants don’t make enough money to afford it. Either they’ll be forced to shut down or they will have to put their prices up. • —Turn to back page.
