By Chris Young Cheshire’s grand country houses, such as Little Moreton Hall, would not be built under current planning guidelines, a former councillor claimed.

Peter Kolker, former head of Congleton Borough Council’s Planning Committee, said the rules preventing uilding in the countryside meant the current generation would leave a oor architectural legacy.

He urged Cheshire East Council to avoid blanket ans that took no account of how attractive a uilding might look. Mr Kolker wrote to the “Chronicle” in response to the council’s “Place Shaping” consultation on uilding proposals for the next 20 years.

He said: “Cheshire contains many attractive large houses, eg Tatton Hall, Little Moreton Hall, Rode Hall and a plethora of small cottages and country houses dotted around country lanes.

“These add to the charm of this essentially rural county and are indeed our rich inheritance from the past.

“Yet under present local plans and the criteria therein, none of these would be permitted nowadays. I simply think this idea is wrong.

“It results in depriving future generations from such buildings that should or could be capable of being built now.

“This is not to promote mass building in the countryside, nor is it any criticism of Cheshire East Planning officers, who are merely applying present criteria.”

He said that that instead of planning officers automatically refusing countryside development, they should be passed on to a committee, which could judge whether or not the building would enhance the landscape.

Under current planning guidelines, the only rural developments allowed are utilitarian housing for agricultural workers, affordable housing or sites for gypsies.

Mr Kolker added: “If someone wants to build a manor house or extend an existing house into open countryside, they can’t do it. The buildings being built have very little style.

“Sometimes there might be an application for a really nice house that doesn’t get to a planning committee as officers would just reject them out of hand. Planning officers often just tick boxes; something comes before them but they can’t allow it.

“I think there should be more democracy. You might get some fluky permissions going through, but if you don’t, then in 100 years’ time there will no houses from this period of any merit.”

The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England agreed that a blanket ban on countryside building was not always desirable and a spokesman said: “We need more affordable housing in the countryside and there is a need for new businesses. As long as development is sensible and valuable countryside isn’t built over, there is a need for small-scale development and to keep a living, vibrant countryside.

“We are not looking for a blanket ban but we can’t have big, sprawling developments.”

Slimming World can help to stop childhood obesity

Obesity is fast becoming a huge problem in both adults and children: 90% of children could be obese by 2050.

The cold hard facts are that one million children under the age of 16 are classed as being obese (British Medical association); these obese youngsters will more than likely grow into obese adults.

Not only this but these adults may suffer from illnesses and problems linked with obesity such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, joint problems and stroke. The country needs to put a stop to this.

Slimming World is the first slimming organisation to offer young people free group membership.

Since 2006 it has helped more than 40,000 11-15 year olds to live a healthier lifestyle.

This is good but is just a drop in the obesity ocean.

Adolescents aged between 11 and 15 can attend group for free if they are accompanied by a feepaying parent or guardian, and have the support of their GP or nurse.

As a child and teenager Claire had always found it difficult to control her weight and found it difficult to deal with the issues that went hand in hand with the problem. She said: “Being

overweight is something that I’ve been used to all my life, something I’ve accepted as being part of me. I’ve always struggled with weight, always having to watch what I eat.”

As Claire grew older she became more aware of the slimming market, starting at her very first club at the age of 15.

“I started to try different diets, they were restrictive with food, calorie counting and generally boring.”

She discovered Slimming World in 2004 and followed the green and original diets losing weight until she discovered she was pregnant with her first child.

“I thought Slimming World was fantastic then but didn’t realise I could continue with the plan throughout my pregnancy”.

She did not return to Slimming World until May 2010 when her sister mentioned to her about “Extra Easy”.

“I was inspired, excited and couldn’t wait to get started. I joined a very supportive group with a lovely consultant who I felt really understood how I felt.

“Most importantly to me there was no humiliation, your weight is never disclosed to anyone else! Since then I have never looked back, cooking meals the whole family could enjoy.

”I couldn’t believe how much freedom and choice I had, nothing was off limits.”

She reached her target weight by October 2010 and felt great.

“I still can’t believe I reached my target weight and now I’m not just a Slimming World member for life, I am looking forward to helping my very own members with their weight loss journey.”

Her Slimming World group will be meeting at Knypersley Sports Club in the Webster Lounge from Wednesday at 7pm.

Congleton’s St John cadets division wins the top shield

The work of Congleton’s St John Ambulance cadets was recognised recently with the resentation of the Cotter Shield at the organisation’s Chester HQ.

David Briggs, Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, presented the shield to Sandra Hassall, the Congleton cadet divisional superintendent and to her assistant Della Bordley.

St John Ambulance in Cheshire recognises the work of its younger members each year and presents the Cotter Shield to the cadet division that has been most efficient in recruiting new members, providing first aid care at public events and completing the administration work.

This year, the Congleton cadets eat all the other divisions across Cheshire to win the shield. The runners-up trophy, the Jock Graham trophy, was presented to the Crewe division.

The awards were presented in the presence of Eleanor Johnson, Lord Mayor of Chester, Consort Derek Johnson and Couns Tom and Angela McInerney, the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Halton.

Awards were presented to St John Ambulance members in Cheshire at the ceremony, including Congleton member Zur Giser who received a “502 hours voluntary service in 2010” certificate.

Dr Don Fitzroy-Smith, Commander for St John Ambulance in Cheshire said: “The Congleton Cadets put in hundreds of hours of their spare time each year to help local people and are a valuable asset to the local community.

“I am extremely proud of all our younger and adult members who provide an outstanding service to the Cheshire community. They are being the difference between a life lost and a life saved”.

Under its Youth Programme St John Ambulance offers personal and professional development for five to 25 year olds such as first aid training.

Youngsters aged from 10 to 18 can become cadets and children aged five to 10 years old can be Badgers.

Addicts shared their stories about recovery

Hundreds of recovering addicts from east Cheshire have met to share their stories of coming clean.

Over 200 people attended this year’s Cheshire Recovery Convention at Crewe Alexandra FC’s Gresty Road Stadium recently.

The event, the first of its kind to be held in the area, was organised by the partner agencies commissioned by the Cheshire Drug Action Team (DAT) including Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CWP), and saw recovering drug and alcohol users from the region come together to share their stories with each other.

Marie Orrell, chairman of Cheshire team said: “The event was inspirational and I was delighted with the high level of attendance and engagement. It was a privilege to share service users’ journeys to recovery and will motivate others to take the same step forward.”

Service users helped put together the event, including making a film to record their experiences, which was well received.

Local drug and alcohol service providers Addaction, Acorn, Trust the Process, Turning Point, Addiction Dependency Solutions and Intuitive Recovery also contributed. Training consultants, Afta Thought, facilitated discussion and comment throughout the day using drama to highlight the issues that services users and their families face on the recovery journey.
