RAY-BAN RAW SOUNDS For Ray-Ban’s latest musical collaboration, iconic Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr came up with five unique concepts to inspire young musical talents Tom Vek, Best Coast, Au Revoir Simone and Mona. The bands have all written new songs, encompassing everything from New York’s Lower East Side to the dreams of youth and Johnny’s legendary guitar skills. Dazed met up with Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino in New York just as she’d finished her latest bout of touring and was about to start recording her second album. She sourced inspiration from Marr’s five concepts to write her new song, “In Your Sleep”.

So what was it like working with Johnny on this project? bethany cosentino: The Smiths were a band I grew up listening to – it’s really cool when you get to do things like this with people whose pictures you had on your blog when you were 16!

How did his photograph “Now Look!” inspire you? The photograph of the man and the woman looking at each other through the old camera was beautiful. Most of my songs are about relationships and miscommunication, so I developed this story about their relationship.

What’s your association with the Lower East Side? There’s so much amazing music that came from here – think Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and all other bands that spent time down here and wrote about it.

What does the Schiller quote, “Keep true to the dreams of your youth” mean for you? When I was 16 I was this weird kid who wore clothes from thrift stores and had a funny haircut and my group of friends were always like: ‘We want to get out of here, move to Hollywood, be in a band.’ Luckily it worked!
