Announcing the third GARDENRAIL ‘Special’ THE ART OF GARDEN RAILWAYSReachingforRealism Most new garden railfarers come from a background of ‘indoor’ scenic model railways and, naturally, they hope to produce a railway running through a believable landscape. The more traditional ‘tracks on sticks’ engineering, apart from looking unsightly, in fact bears no relation at all to any sort of ‘real’ railway infrastructure. This book therefore, is not a point-by-point listing of how to construct a garden railway in a particular way. It is rather, an attractively presented way of cross-referencing our own imagination and artistic endeavour with a practical way forward. In model railway terms, ’realism’ is very hard to define and even more difficult to capture, but Ian Stock’s struggle to produce railway ambience in what (it has to be said) was a very unpromising plot, is described herein. The author also visits a selection of superbly atmospheric garden railways from around the United Kingdom – look out for the hidden gems!
