Change is all around us and, with effect from this edition of GardenRail 213, for May 2012, I am your new editor. But, please don’t be disturbed, changes within Atlantic Publishers are evolutionary, not revolutionary. You will know that I have been features editor for a while and, previously, I have had a watching brief under the keen and experienced eye of Tag. The really good news is that Tag will continue to make significant contributions and, most important, he will be there for all of us, to give a steer (management jargon), and offer advice and guidance from his mine of information, editorial skills, and very considerable hands-on experience over many years. You are familiar with the generous mix in GardenRail, and I hope to bring it some complementary expertise. Your input is welcome, be it comment, letters to the editor, or articles for publication. We are all in your hands, dear readers and contributors – we depend on you as readers, and on the material which you generously send in for potential future articles. Atlantic Publishers believes in continuity, and wishes to provide you with stuff that is familiar, supportive and, most of all, enjoyable.

You should know that I use 45mm gauge track. This is because, originally, I came from LGB and IIm (1:22.5 scale of metre track gauge prototypes with 45mm model track gauge) that is models of a European persuasion. However, the Accucraft Countess, and the suite of stock that has accompanied her over the last few years, convinced me that some UK narrow gauge railways also were of interest, even uplifting. The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway (W&LLR) prototype runs on 2ft 6ins gauge, and Accucraft have used a scale of 1:19 for their models. For these metrics (as they say), 45mm track gauge is marginally closer to scale than 32mm track gauge. But, whatever!

I am inspired by the contents of GardenRail. As an example; there was an item on adding springs to the bogies of the Accucraft W&LLR coaches (GardenRail 203, July 2011 – back copies available). It had me doing just that to all three of my Pickering coaches within less than a week, and the results were wonderful to behold. I look forward to more. Let us also hear more from those of you working with the slightly less common track gauges, scales, and control systems. Remember, many of the things you tell us about are transferable to other situations. Please do share your expertise to better inform and support us all.
