The

Welcome Putting together the 100th issue of GDM gave us the perfect opportunity to bring you something spectactular: a special collector’s edition of the magazine. Only in this issue, The Big 100 section comprises an additional 40 pages with a definitive list of the very best from the homes and design world (from p101). We’ve revisited all the Grand Designs-type properties featured since the first issue in March 2004 and picked our favourites; rounded-up the most iconic UK buildings you can visit; researched a Who’s Who of the people who paved the way for today’s contemporary architecture and design; and tapped into the growing trend for British talent – our pick-of-the-best furniture and homeware designers includes Sir Terence Conran, BarberOsgerby and Bethan Gray. We’ve also researched the design classics we think that no modern home should be without, and grilled a number of industry experts to reveal their predictions of what they think you’ll be seeing in the next 100 issues of the magazine. We even managed to pin down editor-at-large and Grand Designs frontman Kevin McCloud during filming for the new TV series to ask him to reveal his ultimate list of his top 10 TV houses – we suspected Ben Law and his oak-framed sustainable home in the woods would be high on his list. My favourite TV house? It has to be the modernisation of Lincoln Miles and Lisa Traxler’s stone-clad bungalow on the Isle of Wight.

To ensure you don’t miss out on the next 100 issues, take advantage of our celebratory subscription offer – six issues of the magazine for just £10. Turn to p48 for more details. Enjoy also the special discount we’ve set up with The Conran Shop for you – 15 per cent off everything in store or online (p43). Follow us…

OTHERS CELEBRATING 100 THIS YEAR

Huf Haus When it comes to prefabricated houses, Huf Haus is legendary. The high-quality timber frame is renowned for being architecturally superior and super-quick to put up. The first Huf Haus built in the UK was in 1997, but the firm’s history can be traced back to 1912. In fact, the brand now has such a following that Huf Haus owners have launched their own club. Belling From a humble shed in Enfield in 1912, Charles Reginald Belling launched a brand that would make the latest appliances affordable to the mass market, with the first cabinet-style cooker in 1937, the first fan oven in 1971, microwaves in 1979 and range cookers in 1994. Belling’s 100 collection has just been unveiled, which features a distinctive white finish and glass top on ovens,

range cookers and the Baby Belling (left, £249.99). (0844 815 3746; belling.co.uk)

Finn Juhl Born in 1912 in Copenhagen, Juhl started designing furniture in the Thirties – his style focuses on form rather than function. The Chieftains chair (below), £10,883, from Skandium (020 7584 2066; skandium.com), was designed in 1949 and has become one of his most famous pieces. Juhl’s 100th birthday is being celebrated with an exhibition in Tokyo, the restoration of his best-known interior in New York, and events and parties throughout the year in Denmark.
