Believe in people first, profit second Unlike some banks, we don’t have shareholders. So everything we do is for the benefit of our customers and members.

Not all banks are just in it for the money. At The Co-operative Bank our profits are reinvested to provide you with a better bank and shared with members of The Co-operative. And our unique Ethical Policy gives our customers an active say in how we do business. All part of a more responsible approach to money rooted in values going back to 1872. It’s better banking you can believe in.

CONTRIBUTORS IN THIS ISSUE

JULIE MATTHEWS

is an internationally respected autism nutrition specialist. She has helped thousands of children worldwide through her public education programmes, private consultations and her book Nourishing Hope for Autism. This issue she writes for us on how to create a well-rounded diet for children on the autistic spectrum. Julie is also the founder of Cooking to Heal, an autism education and cookery workshop.

ANJUM ANAND is passionate about Indian food and showing people how quick and easy it can be. “I use fresh, local and seasonal produce to create delicious simple recipes with great flavours,” she explains. For our Seasonal Food pages, Anjum shares her knowledge of Ayurveda and helps us to understand the relationship between food and the body. According to Ayurveda, what you eat can affect how you look, how you feel, who you are and most importantly, your health!

LEIGH CLAPP is a photojournalist who lives with her husband and grown up daughter – a 25

year old classically-trained ballet dancer. “I find walking in the forest where we live really relaxing, maybe followed by a pub lunch,” Leigh says. “Nature and wandering around gardens are both work and pleasure, as is travelling.” For this issue, Leigh photographs our new series about allotment gardening, which starts on page 29.

Welcome to issue 34 of The Green parent magazine – our Grow Your Own special in celebration of Spring. I find springtime so exciting. I am looking forward to getting back out into the woods in our tent and living closer to the land, albeit on a temporary basis. Our dream is a yurt in a sunny clearing amongst the hornbeam and oak and as a first step, the bell tent is a beautiful compromise. I love getting up in the night and walking in the moonlight – it always surprises me how alive the woods are whilst we sleep. And the first rays of dappled sunlight shining through the circular canvas roof is a moment of sheer joy that is not often witnessed within the four walls of a house.

We will cook, eat and sleep together in the great outdoors and it feels fantastic to be free of some of the modern trappings. The sleep that you can have on the forest floor away from electromagnetic frequencies is a deep rest unlike any other. Of course we will still be working hard at our computers to put the magazine together and I’ll be writing a new book on natural remedies, but when your job is one that you love, it rarely feels like hard graft!

Recently, through the darker, insular months of winter I have really enjoyed storytelling with my children. We have rediscovered old classics, read beautiful stories from different cultures around the world and made up some tales of our own. I love how it draws us all together at the end of the day and gives ample opportunity for a good long snuggle before sleep. In this issue we look at how to enjoy the art of storytelling with your children on page 8 with tips and ideas on getting started. Get inspired by our Grow Your Own section which starts on page 17 and if you are looking for ways to use that home produce to make healthy meals for the whole family, try our feature on Eating Right for Your Ayurvedic Type on page 42.

I hope that you enjoy this issue and if there is something that you would like us to cover in the magazine, please write to me and let me know. I want to make this magazine exactly what you want to read.

With love and blessings,

Melissa Corkhill, Editor
