Latest issue:

The two feature articles in HALI 187 offer new perspectives on well-known carpet and textiles genres: Louise Mackie introduces her new publication by discussing the important roles played textiles in Islamic culture through reference to contemporary records and accounts; a new approach to understanding the age and provenance of Turkmen rugs is explained by Dewitt Mallary and Jürg Rageth. Two important Safavid carpets are reunited in Hamburg, and we travel with British collectors to a royal funeral on the island of Sumba, Indonesia. In India the art of the nomadic Banjara community is discussed and British Museum curator Richard Blurton examines an intriguing textile from Assam in the museum collection; a unique William Morris carpet and its cartoon are brought together by Anna Mason of the William Morris Gallery. The textile collecting of contemporary artist Seth Siegelaub’s is examined on exhibition in Amsterdam and the Ballard collection of carpets is reviewed as the book and exhibition open in St Louis. In the marketplace section, the three Rothschild Safavid Vase carpets to be sold at Christie’s are previewed as well as HALI at Olympia in June and we review the sale of Vok II at Rippon Boswell and the San Francisco Tribal and Textile Art show along with our regular auction price guide and listings sections.

HALI is an international quarterly magazine covering the world of carpets, textiles and Islamic art. The eclectic mixture of articles encompasses sumptuously illustrated scholarly features, lively reviews of exhibitions and books as well as market news and insightful commentary.
