It’s just over a year since the sad loss of my father, Patrick Henshaw, and although I wasn’t intending to mark the anniversary, circumstances have conspired to produce not just one but two Patrick Henshaw articles. By chance, a fascinating article on the development of his Bowleaze Switcher has arrived from its builder Tom Smith. We’ve covered the Switcher before in MR3, but we take this opportunity to look at the development of what was, with hindsight, quite a groundbreaking locomotive. Elsewhere, the Tiny Tramway Mining Company was the last item my father wrote for Miniature Railway in early 2010. Effectively an industrial narrow gauge set-up squeezed into a suburban garden, it wasn’t technically miniature (it was mostly 2-foot gauge), but not exactly narrow gauge either. Do we have any other gems hidden away? Possibly... we’ll keep sifting through the archives!
Finally, you’ll notice that this issue is bulging at the seams yet again. The only answer is to increase the frequency of ‘Miniature Railway’, but as this would mean cutting back on other journalistic work (there are only so many hours in the day!) it can only happen if readership numbers continue to grow. So please do keep spreading the word and recruiting new subscribers. We are very grateful! DAVID HENSHAW
