The first official steaming of Mariloo at Exbury Gardens was a classy event, made all the more intriguing when we were told that Her Majesty the Queen had been on the footplate the day before. The Queen has to endure some tedious engagements and - no doubt - some emotionally draining ones too,so it was nice to see photographs of a radiant face on the new locomotive.Clearly, HMQ enjoyed her footplate ride in the New Forest. Many of the miniature railways opened in the decades since the Queen took the throne have since closed, but in recent years the tide has turned, with bigger, better lines opening, and several vintage examples being restored. Exbury’s rapid expansion seems to symbolise this new confidence - long may it continue to flourish!
