Cupola
With the World Cup now a fading memory, I was reminded of one pundit’s pre-tournament prediction that sooner or later England would end up playing a country it had once been at war with. I wondered how true this was so did a little research. It actually turns out that of the 31 other nations in the tournament there were just six with which we have been at war in living memory (Argentina, Germany, Italy, Japan, North Korea and Serbia) and a further five countries that England has been to war with only in the dim and distant past (Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Spain and the USA). That leaves 20 countries (or about two thirds) with which we have never had an armed quarrel. Add this to the exemplary behaviour (at time of writing) of the English fans in South Africa and we don’t seem to be the belligerent nation we are sometimes made out to be. (I’ll now don my hardhat while Scots, Welsh and Irish readers prepare to throw their history books at me). What relevance, if any, this has to wargaming, I’ll leave you to judge and move swiftly on. August is traditionally a month for holidays but there’ll be no break here as we build up to our special Colours show issue next month and we’ll be on the road too. I hope to see you at Eastern Front in Norwich on 1 August or at Britcon in Manchester on 14-15 August.
