BEPPE CATUREGLI Map, 2003

Born in Pisa in 1957,architect and designer Beppe Caturegli’s work with his partner Giovannella Formica on international

projects has won recognition for its structural use oflight and colour. With a portfolio ofwork ranging from architecture to

interior, industrial to concept design, travel has been ofgreat importance to Caturegli’s development.

In 1990,he published Tappeti e Arazzi(Carpets and Tapestries) and Viste di un Mondo(Visions ofa World),which marked

a point ofdeparture into the fields ofpainting, applied art and design to explore the signs in the world around us as imprints,

shadows, and symbols ofa contemporary mysticism. In 2004,Caturegli held an exhibition at Nilufar entitled ‘Carpet Maps’,

presenting three works entitled Market,Consumerand Healthcare. The design ofthe carpets is a transposition ofthe graphic

index ofthe stock market charts ofthe New York Stock Exchange, divided into sectors,at a given moment (the date andhour

are indicated on the carpet). The carpet designs are intended as a mental map ofseveral ofthe major, interconnecting nodes

ofthe Western model ofmodern civilisation: financial power, consumerism and the new technologies ofdaily life.
