The venue is Milan

It is an honour to be asked to edit this publication as we in Milan excitedly preparing for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, which this year coincides with the Milan Triennale, a year-long showcase of architectural excellence. I realised some years ago that a rug is much better appreciated when seen in context with other fine pieces of design. At Nilufar gallery in the heart of Milan, I have made it my business to put together original and poetic works, combining the historic with the utterly contemporary. There is nothing more fascinating than

to delve into the vast net that, to me, represents the international design world – a net woven of eras, continents and traditions that are often very distant from each other. The Salone Internazionale del Mobile brings together everything entangled in this net: decorative styles are reinterpreted ironically, we see the produce of research into new materials and the reinvention of applications for old ones. Traditional craftsmanship is put to new uses and industrial objects are re-examined. The lines of art, tradition, economy and geography are woven together like a carpet, forming patterns that satisfy our desire to discover the world and its infinity of languages. I’m hoping to see new designers emerge from the shadows. It is fascinating thing to see what happens when different cultures collide, creating new geographies. On the following pages you can catch a glimpse of the carpets and textiles you can expect to see in the fairground and at galleries around the city, and also examples of carpet design from the last century that give contemporary designers something to live up to.
