Mstrap on those new trainers is now likely to be a distant ore than a month into 2012 and that determination you had on the first day of the year when, after the excesses of Christmas, you couldn’t wait to don your zebra-print leggings and strap on those new trainers is now likely to be a distant memory. And you’re not alone. In fact, you would have done much better than most people if you’d managed to keep up your New Year’s resolutions beyond 10 January – the day most people break them, according to a study by allabouthealth.org.uk.

But while you may have caved into that chocolate craving or given up on your new fitness regime, with the financial crisis likely to rumble on for some time yet, keeping your finances on track is one promise it is essential to try to keep.

To help you stay on course, in this issue we show you how to get rid of your Christmas debt (page 12), the best way to get that job and keep it (page 58) and how you can kick off your savings habit with an ISA (page 69).

This month also sees the launch of the second part of our campaign on Defending the British Family, in which we investigate how catchment areas for good state schools can inflate house prices – sometimes by as much as 35%, according to primelocation.com. With families already facing mounting financial pressures, this cost is simply unbearable for many parents. Enough is enough and we’re calling for greater transparency and fairness. Read more on page 38.

Finally, if you believe you’re paying through the nose for your ‘star’ fund manager, could it be time to give them the boot? We list the signs that show it might be time to find a less expensive, and more successful, person to take the helm. editor@moneywise.co.uk
