ByDanMcCalla Citroën bosses have said they will appeal Mikko Hirvonen’s exclusion from victory on Rally Portugal last week.

The Finn took a strong win on an incident-packed rally after all his major rivals crashed. But Hirvonen was stripped of first place on Sunday evening after event stewards ruled the clutch on his DS3WRC did not conform to the car’s homologation.

Citroën team boss Yves Matton said the incorrect part did not boost the car’s performance. He said: “Given the fact that the reported differences didn’t bring us any advantage, we’ve decided to appeal.” Hirvonen’s title blow, p2-3
