Author Nicolas Trudgian’s professional artistic skills, his acquired expertise in garden scale civil engineering, his love of landscape and innate feel for things mechanical has driven the construction of this expansive garden railway tour de force. The Southern Cross Railway draws its inspiration from many different steam powered railways across the world and the line itself employs both steam and electric motive power. Within these pages are sections on layout design, permanent way construction, track laying, landscaping, tunnels, bridges, water features and planting. The resulting garden railway is therefore a credible combination of art, engineering and experience that all of us, whatever our preferred garden scale, can draw on when turning the pages of this thoroughly engaging, imaginative and instructive book.

Most new garden railfarers come from a background of ‘indoor’ scenic model railways and, naturally, they hope to produce a railway running through a believable landscape. The more traditional ‘tracks on sticks’ engineering, apart from looking unsightly, in fact bears no relation at all to any sort of ‘real’ railway infrastructure. This book therefore, is not a point-by-point listing of how to construct a garden railway in a particular way. It is rather, an attractively presented way of cross-referencing our own imagination and artistic endeavour with a practical way forward. In model railway terms, ’realism’ is very hard to define and even more difficult to capture, but Ian Stock’s struggle to produce railway ambience in what (it has to be said) was a very unpromising plot, is described herein. The author also visits a selection of superbly atmospheric garden railways from around the United Kingdom – look out for the hidden gems!
