dusty roades is retired but keeps busy as a U3A member. A folklore expert, he writes and gives talks about country customs and superstitions. He is also a sea shanty aficionado, and can make dogs from miles away howl when he sings. Although his camping days are over, he is still involved with his local Scout group – and it is his village Scout fete 55 years ago which provides the setting for his ‘I Once Met’ on page 47.

lucy willis is a painter and printmaker. She won the BP Portrait Award in 1992 and was made a Royal West of England Academician in 1993. She has written three books on painting technique, most recently Travels withWatercolour(Batsford), and often travels for inspiration. Last year she went to Malta and Gozo, following in the footsteps of her grandfather, the cartoonist – and artist – HM Bateman: see page 30.

john torode has been a Fleet Street political journalist for almost fifty years. He has also reinvented himself as a travel correspondent, reporting from Ukraine, Taiwan, the Falkland Islands, Lebanon, Brooklyn and China’s vanishing Three Gorges. On page 56 he writes about some of the less well-known sites in Gibraltar, a destination which has much more to offer than apes and nostalgia.
