From our forums: How many nights will you do?

■ How many nights have you had and have planned in your vans before the end of this year? Please state if you are working or retired. I’m working and have had 30 nights with three more planned. Gagakev

■ We’re retired and so far have had 102, with 32 more planned, plus whatever extra ones just happen when we feel the urge! We haven’t yet visited two of our favourite sites this year, so that figure will certainly increase. I guess it ’ll probably be 140 by Christmas. emmerson

■ I’m new to the forum and this is my first post… I just had a count and it ’s 95 so far with 63 more to come, and I work full time. Steveo

■ Probably 80 nights. It would be more but my daughter has to come round to feed the cat and I don’t like to ask her to do more. If I were single I would be away for another three weeks at least. easyt

■ I will probably hit 160-170 unless I become a snowbird and overwinter in Spain. Have stayed at a mix of club sites, CSs and CLs. I can’t understand some people who spend £15k plus on a caravan and then only use it for half a dozen nights a year. graham_somersham

■ You have to be very sad to count the number of nights away. We go on an ad hoc basis as and when we feel like it. Surfer

■ This year has been different with half-term coming two weeks before Easter and then the Royal wedding weekend after that. But by the end of October halfterm we will have completed 44 nights away this year (most of these in April and May). We are both currently working and looking enviously at the number of nights away others have said they have had now that they have retired. Big S

PROS PREFER THAT YOU LOCK OUTFIT Regarding John Hunt’s comment about the use of hitchlocks when towing (‘Towing with a hitchlock is unsafe’, October, page 17), I had researched this issue some years ago. I worked not only with my colleagues in the emergency services, but also with representatives of the Road Recovery Agency – those people who are called upon to recover disabled units.

The view held then was that a combination locked together in one place was far better to deal with than a unit that had become detached as a result of a road traffic incident that left one part of the unit on one carriageway and the other either in another part of that carriageway or, in the worst case scenario, on the opposite carriageway.

If, of course, a combination has been locked and then needs to be separated, road recovery teams have plenty of equipment to ensure that this can be done at the scene. Tim Booth, Tim Booth Consultancy Services Ltd, specialist security advisers to the caravan and leisure industry

THE WAY WE WERE The Rowlands enjoyed 40 years of touring with us

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES My wife and I are in our late eighties and have just decided that caravanning is getting a little too much for us old codgers! A sad moment in our lives, but we have 40 years of happy memories to sustain us.

During those years, we thoroughly enjoyed your magazine. It is, in our opinion, by far the best on the market for caravan owners.

Unfortunately our decision also means that we will have to cancel our subscription and terminate our association with Practical Caravan. Many thanks for all the hours of interesting reading we have enjoyed. All the best for the future to the magazine and its staff. Bryce Rowlands

Nigel Donnelly says Thank you for your kind words about Practical Caravan and for your many decades of loyal readership. Sorry you’ve had to retire from touring but we hope that over the course of your adventures, we’ve been a source of inspiration and information. Anyone else been reading that long?
