HeadlineNews Roll up for the Ea s A return to the glory years of W o

BOOKINGS are now open for THE railway event of the year – the Eastleigh Works Centenary open weekend of May 23 to 25. The fi rst tranche of locomotives have been confi rmed, allowing The RM to end speculation and reveal some details about what, subject to availability, will be on display. It is thought that the planned line-up of Bulleid Pacifi cs will be the largest since 1967! On top of that, there will be an amazing line-up of steam, diesel, electro-diesel and electric traction. . . plus no fewer than 100 trade stands! The Railway Magazine and Bruce Knights of Knights Rail Services (KRS) have been working very closely to ensure that this will be an event to remember. Both are hoping to raise a signifi cant sum of money for the three charities that will benefi t from this event – and we are delighted to confi rm that rail & music mogul Pete Waterman has agreed to open the event Following our hugely successful Carnforth open days last year, Eastleigh celebrates 100 years of the former LSWR and Southern Railway Works. Readers will be aware that the plant was seemingly closed for good in March 2006 when Alstom decided to cease operations there. (RM April 2006). But, thanks to KRS, it has since been reborn and is now once again full of locomotives and trains, doing the work it was designed for – such a far cry from the fate of similar-sized ex-BR works, such as Swindon and Doncaster Crimpsall, which have now largely bitten the dust. There’s more good news for RM readers, who are able to buy tickets in advance at discounted rates either via the www.eastleigh100.com website or by using the coupon on this page. Our readers also have the opportu

nity to participate in an auction and a raffl e. Money raised by every activity associated with this event will be shared equally between three charities. These are the Teenage Cancer Trust, Naomi House Children’s Hospice and the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) Association – the charity chosen by our parent company, IPC Media, for 2009.

The ‘Money can’t buy’ auction

“For the second year running, The Railway Magazine has been asked to partner THE major rail event of the year. We are delighted and excited to be involved in this Eastleigh Centenary gala – especially as it didn’t seem possible just three years ago when the Works closed down!”

“I would like to welcome RM readers to this unique event to see behind the scenes at the revitalised Eastleigh Works. Knights Rail Services and The RM hope to raise thousands of pounds for each of the three charities and we would like to thank you in advance for helping us to raise these funds.”

RM Editor Nick Pigott Bruce Knights

THROUGH the generosity of a number of rail industry companies – Grand Central, First Great Western, Virgin and other organisations such as Stafford Railwayana Auctions UK, – several unique and special prizes have been offered to The Railway Magazine and the ‘Eastleigh 100’ organisers for a ‘money can’t buy’ auction. The items offered include a locomotive nameplate, a Southern totem, a cab ride on the ECML, a chance to see how the marketleading RM is produced, a fl ame-cut panel from a Class 56 scrapped at C.F. Booth, footplate rides on the G/WR at Toddington with the iconic City of Truro and a cab ride on the Leighton Buzzard Railway. Virgin Trains’ Steven Knight has also very generously offered us a nameplate for this special auction.

What is unusual and unique about this plate is that it has never been fi tted to a train and was intended for the Virgin Challenger HSTs, which never materialised but would have worked Paddington-SwindonGloucester-Birmingham services. Its identity will be revealed next month. In addition, PTG Tours has generously donated a holiday for two in Portugal, worth £1,500, as a prize. It will cost nothing to bid and the auction will be by sealed bid only, with all bids being legally binding. Visitors to Eastleigh will be able see some of the items and bid until auction closing time, 14.00 on May 25. Details of all the items for auction will be outlined next month and on website www.eastleigh100.com from the beginning of April, from where you can download bid forms.
